For the second straight day, the combination of timely hitting and outstanding pitching was too much for the 14th-ranked Nebraska softball team to overcome, as sixth-ranked California ended the Huskers’ season with a 6-1 win in Sunday’s NCAA Regional final.Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year Kristina Thorson, who had her scoreless streak snapped at 30 innings in Saturday’s 4-2 win over the Huskers, was brilliant in winning her fifth straight start, including four consecutive victories over ranked foes. In a complete-game effort, Thorson allowed just a single run on only three hits while striking out 12.

Finally the University of Nebraska has found an assistant basketball coach.  After being turned down by the first two people on their list Nebraska has hired Carlton ‘Silk’ Owens to fill the spot left by Scott Spinelli when he left to take an assitant coaching spot with Whichita State.

Owens joins the Nebraska staff after spending the past five years serving as a coach and administrator in AAU ranks, including guiding the Madison Broncos in New York City. He previously spent the 2000-01 season as an assistant coach at the University of Albany, following one season at St. Peters (N.J.) College, where he also served as an assistant coach and was an instructor in the team’s summer camps.

Owens has also previously coached in the Big 12 Conference, as he spent three seasons assisting Coach Tom Penders at Texas from 1996 to 1998. With Owens on staff, the Longhorns made NCAA Tournament appearances in 1996 and 1997, finishing third in the league standings each year. Overall, the Longhorns earned a 53-39 record during Owens’ three seasons in Austin.

Nebraska Baseball is back on the winning track after beating Creighton 4-1 tonight and winning the season series against their rivals 3-0.  The game at Rosenblatt Stadium set the highest attendence record in college baseball this year at 21,158.

Andrew Brown hit a homerun in the 8th inning before Jake Opitz singles and Jeff Christy smacked a triple into the left-center gap.  Christy finished with a single, double, and triple.  The triple was Christy’s first of his career.

The Bluejays, down three runs after eight innings, made things interesting after Jensen retired the first two batters in the ninth. Ryan Urzendowski and Chase Odenreider singled, and John Nowaczyk was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  The game ended when Brown, the Huskers’ left fielder, caught a Zach Daeges fly ball at the warning track.

I just heard that Mike Rozier has been elected into the College Hall of Fame!  Mike Rozier is among 13 former college greats who are part of the 2006 Division I-A Hall of Fame Class. The 2006 College Football Hall of Fame Division I-A Class, which also includes legendary coaches Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno, will be inducted at the 49th Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 5, 2006, at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. They will be officially enshrined at the Hall in South Bend, Ind., during ceremonies in the summer of 2007.

Rozier will become the 13th former Husker great in the College Football Hall of Fame, and Nebraska’s first inductee since fellow Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers was part of the 2000 class. Nebraska is also well-represented by coaches in the College Football Hall of Fame with six former Husker coaches in the Hall of Fame, most recently Tom Osborne in 1998.

Rozier won the Heisman in 1983 when he rushed for 2,148 yards, and scored a school record 29 touchdowns.  The 2,148 ranks 5th on the all time season rushing leaders chart.

Rumors going around Lincoln is that Marcus Walker will be transferring to another basketball team.  Stating that his style of play does not fit in well with the offense that Coach Barry Collier wants to run.  If this is true, exepect Richardson and White to pretty much get all the playing time at point guard this next season.

The cowbell has rung again after sitting on the shelf for 4 months!  The Nebraska Football staff got its second committ this year when DeAndre West committed to the program last night.  DeAndre has followed Coach Callahan through his career and also got to know Coach Wagner pretty good during recruiting.

West has never been to Lincoln but says he just knows it is the right school and program for him to further his career.  DeAndre will be taking an un-official visit with his coach next month.  He plans on taking his official trip September 23, for the Troy game.

Look for West to play cornerback for the Blackshirt Defense.  He accounted for 140 tackles last year on defense and 17 touchdowns at running back.

Welcome to the Husker Family DeAndre!  GO BIG RED!

The Nebraska Basball team is not heading in the right direction right now.  They have lost their last 6 of 7 games and 4 in a row.  The seven-inning loss Sunday marked Nebraska’s first under the Big 12 run rule since 1998. It also eliminated the second-place Huskers (37-12, 16-8) from contention for the league title. The crown belongs to Texas, which finishes the regular season Friday through Sunday at Missouri without any pressure.

Nebraska will try to get back on the winning track tonight when it plays in-state rival Creighton at Rosenblatte Stadium.  Nebraska has won both previous games against the Blue Jays this year.

LINCOLN - Rhonda Revelle figured this was only a matter of time.  For three straight years since 2002, when the Nebraska softball team last played in an NCAA regional at Iowa City, the Huskers have welcomed Iowa to their postseason party in Lincoln.  But this season, it’s the Hawkeyes’ turn to host the Huskers.

Nebraska (42-10) and Iowa (39-20) will open the NCAA tournament facing off at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Pearl Field. Tenth-seeded California (44-12) and Missouri Valley Conference regular-season champion Illinois State (37-14) were the other two teams sent to the Iowa City regional.

Nebraska and Baylor will kickoff a huge 3 game series tonight in Waco at 7 pm.  If Nebraska wants a shot at a top 8 regional seed for the College World Series they pretty much have to win two out of three or even sweep Baylor. The final two games of the series have been pushed back to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

All three games between the Huskers and Bears will be carried across the state on the Pinnacle Sports Network, including KLIN (1400 AM) in Lincoln, KFAB (1110 AM) in Omaha and KRVN (880 AM) in Lexington, and on the Internet on Huskers.com. In addition, Saturday and Sunday’s games will be carried on SIRIUS Satellite Radio (Ch. 147). Live video will also be available for HuskerNside subscribers.
