NebraskaFirst year Nebraska Basketball coach Doc Sadler has compiled a huge recruiting class for next year that consists of 7 players. Usually the max a college basketball team will take per year is 3-5 players depending on how many scholarships are available but with recent transfers Sadler had extra scholarships available and choose to use them this year.

Here are the recruits and some information about each player:

• Alex Chapman, 6-9, 225, Canby, Ore. (Canby HS/Sheridan, Wyo., College): Junior college transfer with three seasons of eligibility. Averaged 16 points and eight rebounds at Canby High, but suffered a season-ending knee injury in the 14th game. His 6-10 brother Clinton signed with Texas last week. Picked NU over Texas A&M, Wyoming, Pacific.

• Alonzo Edwards, 6-7, 215, Houston (Klein Forest HS): Averaged 18 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots last season. Listed as No. 13 player in Texas by texashoops.com. Sadler said Edwards may be the best athlete in the recruiting class. Picked NU over Texas Tech, USC, Wyoming.

• Steve Harley, 5-11, 170, Temple Hills, Md. (Marriott HS/South Plains, Texas, College): Picked as a preseason first-team junior college All-American. Averaged 20.7 points and 4.1 assists last season. Scored 29 points in a season-ending loss to No. 1 Howard College. Originally signed with UNLV. Picked NU over Kansas State, Seton Hall, St. John’s.

• Josh “Cookie” Miller, 5-7, 165, Charleston, West Va. (Capital HS/ Harmony, Ohio, Community School): Prep school recruit who played on same AAU team as national Top 10 recruits O.J. Mayo and Bill Walker. Former West Virginia high school player of the year. Averaged 17 points and 12 assists at Harmony. Picked NU over Marshall, Cleveland State, Toledo.

• Rishawn Norwood, 6-3, 185, Akron, Ohio (Buchtel HS/Mt. San Antonio, Calif., CC): Led California junior colleges in scoring last year at 27.2 points a game, with 50 in one game. All-stater in high school averaging 25 points a game. Played against NU assistant Phil Mathews’ team last year. Picked NU over Kansas State, Fresno State, Washington, UTEP. ***Rishawn Norwood is a great pickup and I expect him to be the star of this class***

• Shang Ping, 6-10, 230, Harbin, China (Illinois Central College): Averaged 14.5 points and 4.5 rebounds last season. A preseason second-team All-American known for his toughness. Can play facing the basket and works well in transition game. Picked NU over Oklahoma State, Pacific.

• Brandon Richardson, 6-0, 160, Hawthorne, Calif. (Hawthorne HS): Averaged 22.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.7 assists last season. Scored 38 and 31 in back-to-back playoff games. Was his league’s MVP. Can play point or shooting guard. Picked NU over Utah, Cal Fullerton.

NebraskaWhat a great turn for Aleks Maric, Maric lead the huskers with 29 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocked shots in 29 minutes.  Maric coming back from having his appendix took out, played more minutes then any Husker fan though he would.  Twenty-nine minutes it a lot for someone to play in their first game back but Aleks in great condition Coach Sadler said the was able to go that far into the game.

Nebraska returns to action this Saturday, Nov. 18, when the Huskers host the Creighton Bluejays at 7 p.m. in a second straight matchup of in-state teams. Tickets are nearly sold out, and fans are asked to contribute new or in good condition picture and chapter books at the game to support the Read to Succeed Book Drive.

NebraskaThe Nebraska coaching staff keeps on bringing in the quarterbacks to run the Husker offense.  Maurice Purify’s quarterback in junior college is the latest to comitt to the Husker program.

Zac Lee accepted a scholarship offer yesterday because he said ” It felt like home ” when he took his official visit to Lincoln.  Lee will be enrolling in January and has 4 years to play 3.  He also says he is going to come in and try to win the starting quarterback spot no matter who is on the depth chart.

Brad Hoiseth of jcgridiron.com rates Lee as the nation’s No. 2 junior college QB. Lee has also rushed for five touchdowns this season and clocks in the 40-yard dash at 4.7 seconds.

I would not expect any more quarterback committs with this class as they are loaded at that position right now.  Look for a few defense players to comitt in the next 2-3 weeks though.

NebraskaThe Nebraska men’s basketball team, in desperate need of some good news, got some Monday afternoon.

Junior center Aleks Maric practiced for the first time since having his appendix removed 11 days ago and is expected to play in tonight’s season-opener against the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Getting Maric back for this game is huge, let him play 20 minutes or so and hopefully regain his conditioning over the next few weeks.  With Maric in there, I predict the Huskers will win by 8, without him they lose by 4-5.

NebraskaNebraska is offering another kicker a scholarship hopeing that his big leg can lead to 45+ yard field goals.  Adi Kunalic, a strong-legged senior at North Crowley High School in Fort Worth, Texas verbally committed to the program after being offered a scholarship last week.

You can tell that the coaches do not feel that Jordan Congdon can hit anything longer the 42 yards and really don’t have confidence in him so they are signing another kicker that they hope they can rely on.

It sucks to use another scholarship on a kicker but those 3 points and field goals are very important in todays game.  Gotta have the faith in your kicker and if that means using another scholarship, I’m all for it.

GO BIG RED!

NebraskaWow, what a game between the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Aggies of Texas A&M!  It clearly looked early in the game the Huskers were going dominate all day long but once again the third quarter seems to bite the Huskers in the ass lol.

It was nice to see Cody Glenn back in the game and making contributions in the first half.  That touchdown really had to give him some motivation and a good feeling to keep chugging along even when he isn’t getting the ball that many time during the game.  Marlon Lucky also hit the whole good and I thought he could have had a few more big runs if he had used his blocks downfield better.

Now to the spark of the offense, Zac Taylor had a pretty good game overall finishing the game 21-of-35 for 267 yards and two touchdowns. Taylor also set the school record at NU for touchdowns in a season with 22 and is now the school’s all-time leader in passing yards.

On the receiving side of the ball you seen Taylor use three different receivers for bigtime plays on the last drive of the game.  Todd Peterson came up hugh, and little Dan Erickson came up with a huge first down.  Maurice Purify had the game winning touchdown with 20 seconds left when he over matched the smaller db for the touchdown.  Taylor needs to throw to Purify atleast 10 times a game in my opinion, good things happen when the ball gets in Purify’s hands.

Now to the defensive side of the ball, I was throwing things around my hotel room watching the game in the second half watching how terrible the db’s were playing.  How many missed tackles Shanle, Green, and Jones had, it was pretty damn embarassing.  If those tackles are made, the game isn’t even close and the Huskers win by 10-14.  The good part of the defense was the defensive line.  They controlled the option for the most part and didn’t make too many mistakes.  Barry Turner also turned in a huge game on the line and of course with his blocked field goal that gave the Huskers the chance to win in the end.

Up next for the Huskers are the hated Colorado Buffaloes in Lincoln on Nov 25th.

NebraskaFreshman Sek Henry scored a game-high 19 points to lead Nebraska in scoring for the second straight game, but it wasn’t enough as SIU-Edwardsville got 19 points from Ty Johnson and 12 from Nick Arth in the Cougars’ 54-50 win over the Huskers in their final exhibition game Saturday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

The Huskers were led by Henry, who shot 6-of-15 from the field in 36 minutes on the floor. Fellow freshman Ryan Anderson had 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting for Nebraska, while 5-foot-9 senior guard Charles Richardson Jr., led the Huskers in rebounding for the second straight game with six.

After finishing exhibition play, the Huskers open their regular season on Tuesday night against Nebraska-Omaha at 7 p.m. at the Devaney Center.

I have a feeling this is going to be a very very long season for the Nebraska Basketball team.  They are way to young, and have had way to many injuries early this season I don’t see them getting in a grove and competing in the Big 12 this year.

NebraskaThe Nebraka Cornhuskers are ready to take on the Aggiest of Texas A&M Saturday afternoon in College Station, Texas.  Gametime is set for 3:30 eastern time from Kyle Field.

Texas A&M comes into the game with a 8-2 overall record and 4-2 in the Big 12.  They are lead by sophomore quarterback Stephen McGee and big bruising running back Jorvorskie Lane.  Lane is a big back and will have to be hit by more then one person to be brought down.

Nebraska has been practicing with loud nosies during practice all week long to prepare for the crazy loud fans at Texas A&M.  So much so that the coaches say the Texas A&M fight song was stunk in their head after practice and that students on campus were complaining about it.  The key to the game in my opinion for the Huskers to win is keep the turnovers down, and stop the big back Lane.

My prediction:  Huskers 24 Texas A&M 17

NebraskaWith the resignation of Dan McMcCarney at Iowa State, Omaha North dual-threat quarterback Phillip Bates is opening up his recruiting once again.  Bates was 100% headed towards Iowa State because he felt he would fit in well with the coaching staff and the offense that they run but things have really changed now.

Schools that Bates said he will look at are:  Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Arizona State, Washington, and Texas A&M.

I still don’t think Bates ends up being a Husker because he is so dead on with being a college quarterback.  The only way he ends up being a Husker in my opinion is if he switches to defense to play safty which recruiting gurus have said would be his better position to make it to the NFL.
