NebraskaCoach Callahan released great info regarding the injuries to Marlon Lucky and Lydon Murtha today.  Both players have minor injuries and will be ready to go in the fall, and should be able to have a great summer of workouts.

It was a big scare with Lucky and Murtha went down.  Murtha went down with an apparent ankle injury early in the Spring Game and Lucky early in the 4th quarter which looked like it could have been a terrible ACL injury.  Lucky only has a mild strain of his MCL in his knee and it will just need some rest to get better.  Wow, we can only imagine if it would have been a ACL.

The injury to Lucky would have left the Huskers with Glenn and Major Culbert at running back right now.  Would have meant for sure that Marcus Mendoza or incoming freshman Quentin Castille would have got early playing time as well.  Right now, they both might not redshirt as it stands, but I would love for them to be able to and get a full season in of conditioning and learning the playbook.

NebraskaIf you had a chance to watch the spring game in Lincoln yesterday, or on the NFL Network last night, you will probably agree that it was pretty good game.  Some exciting plays, some missed catches, and two injuries that scared us all.

The two main quarterbacks, Sam Keller and Joe Ganz both played really well.  They both split time with the No. 1 offense as the Red team pounded the White 38-0 at Memorial Stadium. They combined to complete 21 of 31 passes for 350 yards against No. 2 and No. 3 defensive players, who generated little pass rush and often left open receivers to pick from.

Veteran receivers helped make it easier Saturday as both Todd Peterson and Maurice Purify caught four passes. The Keller-Purify tandem looked polished as Keller left a pass short on the left sideline in the second quarter, and Purify slowed on a “go” route, cut behind cornerback Armando Murillo and took a 36-yard play to the 1-yard line.

Marlon Lucky had a pretty good day, except for hurting his MCL late in the game when he probably shouldn’t have been playing.  He will be getting an MRI soon but they don’t think it will be too serious.

Cody Glenn also had a nice day, delivery some sharp hits to the linebacks and db’s when he met them.  It will be fun to watch the Lucky and Glenn show once again!

On the defensive side of the ball I was really impressed with the linebackers of course.  Especially Octavien, he just flew around to the ball from everywhere on the field.  I would really like to see him lineup on a rush end from time to time and blow right by the line for a hard hit on the quarterback.  We will have to see how the coaches use him this next season but you have got to use his speed to your advantage!

If anyone reading this blog went to the game yesterday (which I’m sure there are) and you took pictures or would like to comment on the game, please leave a comment and let us know what you thought!

NebraskaThe Huskers lost their 6th game during the last at-bat of the game and that has Coach Anderson pissed off.  The Huskers just aren’t closing out ballgames like they have in the past.  You have to have trust in your bullpen, and one thing the Huskers don’t have is a true save specialist like they have in the years past.  Something has got to change or there is going to be some bigtime changes with Nebraska Baseball.

The final score ended up being 5-3 giving the Huskers another close lose.  Coach Anderson said after the game this it is his job to help the team get the lead, but at some point the players are going to have step up and close out a ballgame.  Which they aren’t doing as we stated above… I don’t know what else to say about this Husker Baseball team right now.  They are just pretty damn bad!

NebraskaWow, this comes as a total shock for anyone that follows Nebraska Athletics.  No one would have imagined the spring game being on TV, let alone the NFL Network.  Usually the Huskers prefer to keep the spring game off tv so other schools can’t get a good copy of the game and begin scouting the Huskers so early.

The Nebraska Athletic Department and NFL Network have reached an agreement for the game to be carried on a tape-delay basis on the network on Saturday evening at 8 p.m. CDT

Greg Sharpe will call the play-by-play action for the NFL Network. Sharpe will be joined on the telecast by former Husker wide receiver Matt Davison. Nebraska Head Coach Bill Callahan will also join Sharpe in the booth for part of the telecast to provide insight into the Husker football program.

NebraskaIt was an ugly way to end the game but the Huskers found a way to hold on and beat the Hawkeyes last night in Lincoln.  Going into the ninth inning, the Huskers were leading 7-2 before the Hawkeys pushed across 4 runs in the top of the 9th.

NU pitchers Steve Edlefsen and Matt Foust walked four Iowa hitters, unleashed a pair of wild pitches and surrendered two hits in a wild final inning.

Jake Opitz and Jeff Tezak led the Huskers at the plate with two hits and two rbi’s each.

Next up for the Huskers is a 4 game roadtrip starting down in Wichita as they get ready to battle the Schockers.

NebraskaOh man, how this offensive line is shaping up!  With players like Dan Hoch, Baker Steinkuhler, Trevor Robinson, and now Bryce Givens, this could be the best offensive linemen class at Nebraska in 15 years!

Givens is the latest commit for the Nebraska Football team, and he measures in at 6 foot 6.5 inches and weighs 258 pounds.  You can expect a redshirt year and adding on 25-30 lbs to that frame working with Dave Kennedy.

Now what recruits want to play behind a stud offensive line like that in a few years!  Get ready to sign up!

NebraskaDespite losing Sunday’s game against the Cowboys, the Nebraska Baseball team still managed to win their first Big12 series of the year.  Grabbing wins on Friday and Saturday behind strong pitching from Tony Watson and Johnny Dorn the Huskers got off to a great start.  The defense played better and when you have good defense to go along with good starting pitching, you are going to win more ballgames.

Sunday’s game didn’t go as well for the Huskers as they lost 7-5 to the Cowboys.  DJ Belfonte had another good game Sunday as he tied his career high with three hits but it wasn’t quite enough for the Huskers. Belfonte’s three-hit day was one of four multi-hit efforts in the Husker lineup, as NU out-hit Oklahoma State, 11-10. Ryan Wehrle Andrew Brown and Andy Gerch all went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Charlie Shirek pitched well for Nebraska in a losing effort, going 5.0 innings – the longest relief stint of his career – after coming into the game in relief of Zach Herr in the second. Shriek, who dropped to 2-4 on the year, tied his second high with seven strikeouts, but allowed a pair of runs on four hits, as OSU took the lead for good on Ridling’s fifth-inning RBI double.

NebraskaThe Nebraska Football team received a bigtime committment from Elkhorn’s Trevor Robinson on Friday.  Robinson is the third Top 100 player that the Huskers have received a committment from so far and all three are offensive linemen! Wow what this line will be like in 2-3 years!

Robinson had a final three of Nebraska, Michigan, and Notre Dame but ended up staying close to home because of distance.  He said all three schools were equal in everything he was looking for so he decided to just play in his home state and for the Huskers!

NebraskaWow what a pitching performance by Tony Watson yesterday against the Cowboys.  Watson threw a 115 pitch complete game for the Huskers.  He finished with 12 strikeouts which was a career high.  Now that is how you win conference games, when you have strong starting pitching and the defense doesn’t let you down with costly errors.

Watson got plenty of support from the Huskers offense, which entered the series hitting a league-worst .282. Nebraska tallied 11 hits, including three from third baseman Craig Corriston, built a 5-1 lead after five innings and never trailed.

Corriston got the Huskers on the board with a solo home run to left to lead off the second. One out later, Andy Gerch doubled down the right-field line. Bryce Nimmo followed with an RBI single to put Nebraska up 2-0.  Nimmo then added the third Huskers run after opening the fourth with his second hit. He moved to third on Mitch Abeita’s single then scored on a sacrifice fly by DJ Belfonte.

Nebraska extended its lead and chased Oklahoma State starter Oliver Odle in the fifth. Jake Opitz, Corriston and Jeff Tezak posted consecutive one-out singles to end Odle’s day after just 4 1/3 innings. Andy Gerch followed with a wind-aided RBI double to center to cap the NU scoring.

The two teams will battle it out again today at 1:05 as Johnny Dorn takes the mound for the Huskers.  Let win the series today with a big win by the Huskers!

NebraskaAtleast the Nebraska Baseball team was able to beat their in-state rival last night in Omaha.  The Huskers got up 9-0 only to blow the lead due to poor pitching and terrible defense that has gave them trouble all season long.

The two teams combined for 22 runs, 28 hits and nine errors on a night where temperatures hovered in the upper 20s at the end of the game with wind chills. Six different Huskers had two hits, including Andrew Brown who scored three times, and Andy Gerch who also drove in a pair of runs.

Thad Weber picked up the win for the Huskers.  Drew Bowman and Charlie Shirek both and pretty bad perfomances which has to cause concern as both were planned on to be weekend starters for this Husker team.

The Huskers will return to action on Friday afternoon, as they take on Oklahoma State beginning at 2 p.m. The game will be carried on the Husker Sports Network and on Huskes.com.
