NebraskaThree Nebraska Baseball players have been suspended for their role in trying to return bats to Scheels for cash.  These bats were given to the team to use during last season and once the season was over, they choose to take some of them and try to “return” them to Scheels and get cash.

Andy Gerch will be sitting out the first 12 games next year.  Right now it is uncertain if Gerch will even play baseball as he recovers from major surgery on his shoulder during the off season.

Craig Corriston who was also involved in the incident has been suspended for the first six games as well.

Catcher Jeff Lanning, also got hit with a six-game penalty, but he’s transferred to the University of New Orleans and will serve the penalty there I would assume.

Jeff Tezak will not miss any games because he received less than $100 in the fiasco.

All of the suspensions and games were based on how much money the players received.  Jeeze, I wonder what Gerch all tried to sell lol.  C’mon boys are you strapped that hard for cash?

NebraskaSam Keller was officially named the starting quarterback of the Nebraska Football team on Monday.  Most Husker fans knew that this would be the decision that Coach Callahan would make choosing Keller over Joe Ganz.

It was kind of suprising that Callahan made the decision on Monday as he has always said it would be made the week of Sep 1st when the Huskers open the 2007 season against Nevada.   It was also exactly one year ago that Keller decided to leave Arizona State for Nebraska and now one year later he is being named the starter.

I’m ready for the football season to begin!  GO BIG RED!!!

NebraskaThe University of Nebraska is conducting a in-house investigation into the Nebraska Baseball team and atleast four players that tried to sell team issued clothes and team equipment.  Scheels employees said that some players came in and tried to return things for cash and when one of the employees noticed who they were contacted the university.

Gerch said the situation was a “miscommunication.” Asked to name the others involved, described by people with knowledge of the situation as important contributors to the team, Gerch said, “that’s not my spot to say.”

Yeah, miscommunication my butt Andy….  This is just another embarrising moment for the Nebraska Baseball team.  You players should know better.

NebraskaFormer Husker Baseball player Joba Chamberlain made his Major League Debut last night with the New York Yankees.  Chamberlain pitched the final two innings of the game and did not allow a run.  He did have two walks and two strikeouts in the two innings.

Chamberlain powered through the minor leagues, dominating at each level. In 18 games (15 starts) at Class A Tampa, Class AA Trenton and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, he went 9-2 with a 2.45 ERA and an opponent batting average of .198. In 881/3 innings, he allowed 27 walks and struck out 135.

It will be fun to see Joba do well for the Yankees, even though I hope they lose every game of the season :)

Nebraska SportsThe Nebraska Football team began practice for the upcoming season today and by the opening press conferences you sure can tell they are ready to get going.  We hope to have some reports up every few days on how practices are going to keep everyone updated.

First off Zack Bowman and Andy Christensen did not practice today.  Bowman is expected back anytime to take part in drills but there wasn’t much said why Christensen did not take part in practice.

Zac Taylor was back with the Huskers today, but he pretty much just watched practice and didn’t really help out much.  He would like to help out but I’m not sure what he is allowed to do with the team at this point.  I think he would be a great addition as a Graduate Assistant in the future.  He could really work with the young quarterbacks and teach them the west coast offense.

NebraskaRivals.Com released their updated Top100 players list today and also made some changes to their 5-star selections.  Nebraska Recruits, Blaine Gabbert, Bryce Givens, and Jonas Gray all moved up in the rankings.

Blain Gabbert moved up to the #14 players in the country and received his 5th star.  Many people expected Gabbert to be a 5-star from the beginning but was only awarded a 4-star by Rivals.  Once he showed off his arm at the a Nike Camp and the Elite 11 camp, everyone was blown away and knew he would be getting the 5th star during the next update.

Bryce Givens moved all the way up to #69 in the Top100.  Givens totally dominated at the Boulder Nike Camp and scouts really took notice.  He has a large frame and can easily play around 300 lbs and move around just as fast he does right now.  It could be scary what Givens does in Husker Red.

Jonas Gray, the speedy running back from Michigan has moved up to the #36 spot in the list.  Gray is a player that could come in and get early playing time as a freshman.  He is currently rated the top player in Michigan.

NebraskaA bigtime running back recruit has committed to the Nebraska Football team this morning.  The #1 player out of the state of Michigan, Jonas Gray said yes to the Huskers over scholarship offers from the Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, Wisconsin Badgers, Lousiville Cardinals, Florida Gators, Minnesota Gophers, and more smaller schools.

Gray is a 5’10, 213 lb running back that is very quick. He ran a 4.58 40 at the Michigan camp which is always ran at much slower speeds due to their track.  Gray had the fastest time ever at that camp and that is when Michigan offered a scholarship and really tried to get him to join their team.

It will be exciting to see Jonas part of the Big Red in a year!

NebraskaThe Nebraska Football team picked up a much needed defensive tackle prospect last night as Darius Parish committed to the football team.  Parish plays for Wichita North down in Kansas so he has been familiar with Nebraska Football.

While Parish delivered a commitment to Nebraska, he says that he’s still thinking about the possibility of other visits this fall.  Right now we would have to list Parish as a “soft” committ since he says he will be taking other visits.  If a higher calibur player wants to committ to the program, I would assume the coaches would say c’mon board and then drop a scholarship for someone who is still out there looking.

Keep checking back at NebSports as we will keep you updated on Nebraska Recruiting.
