NebraskaThings are not getting any better for the Nebraska Football team right now.  Coming off a blowout loss to the Missouri Tigers, the Huskers fell behind early and never was in todays game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys.  The 45-14 loss was the worst loss in Lincoln since 1958.

It was the fourth time this year that the defense gave up 40 points as well.  Oklahoma State racked up 551 total yards today on the Nebraska defense.  The Huskers were not able to stop the run or the pass so the Cowboys pretty much did whatever they wanted to do today.

The offense wasn’t much better today either.  It was the second straight game that they have struggled and I don’t know if it will be any better the rest of the year to be honest.  Sam Keller did throw for two td’s in the second half, but he also had two interceptions.

One bright spot on the offense was Quentin Castille who carried the rock 20 times for 102 yards.  Marlon Lucky and Roy Helu chipped in to help with the running game as well.  Lucky ran for 66 yards, and Helu finished with 55.

I don’t know where this team goes from here to be honest.  Can they drop any more?  Will they pick things up and go out and beat Texas A&M in a week?  Lets hope they get some motivation, and play their best game of the year and beat the Aggies.

Where’s the improvement? This team has gone nowhere under Callahan and frankly what was once a proud history in the Blackshirts seems a distant memory. Can anyone say Turner Gill?

  2. A. White Says:

Personally, at this point in the season, we had perhaps best hope they continue the downward spiral (although how much deeper it goes is questionable). A&M can stomp us … let all the rest of the season’s opponents stomp us. Then MAYBE, just MAYBE, someone can override Perlman, and fire the AD, HC, and DC, and bring in a coaching staff that can mold this raw talent (and there IS a LOT of talent out on that field … just not amongst the coaching staff) into not just a team, but a raging, stomping, scoring, snarling Nebraska team like most of us who can blog, grew up with.

I have followed Husker football for more than 30 years. I don’t think I have ever witnessed the blackshirts play as dismal as they have shown in the last two weeks. What concerned me more as a previous high school coach is the conservative play calling after the Huskers found themselves in such a hole. This team lacks the passion necessary to be a good team. I’m perplexed by the blackshirts. For years the blackshirt meant something special, but I can’t blame the players. I think it’s time Coach Callahan really thinks about Cosgrove’s tenure with Nebraska. The last two weeks were hard to swallow as a lifetime Husker fan. Let’s hope for the best next week.

couldn’t agree more….I’ve been a die hard fan for all my years and I am 55 now. If a team with the talent that the Huskers have doesn’t have fire in their belly then it’s a coaching problem. It’s painful to watch and dumbfounding to understand how a program can fall so fast and so hard.

  5. Cliff Says:

It’s all about confidence and motivation and the players and coaches do not have it right now.

It starts at the top with Coach Callahan and Coach Cozgrove. The players don’t like how they are playing, and definately don’t like the packages that the coaches are using for play calls.

I’m trying to stay positive, but it’s very hard at this point. We need someone with Husker Blood at the top, someone that the players will trust and play their hearts out for.

As a child growing up with the Huskers I watched players like Tony Davis, Vince Humm, Tom Rathman, Dave Remmington and many others just simply destroy other players. I am not sure if this team really has a spirit problem, I mean heart, or if these Huskers are trying to tell everyone something is wrong with the system. Personally, I would fire the chancelor, the athletice director and the devensive coordinator. It concerns me that this team cannot make adjustments, that is a coaching problem. One time Cletus Fisher gave me some excellent advise about being the best football player. He said, ” Troy, God gave your hands for eating and hitting people. If you watch my backs when they run with the ball, they punish the defense.” Well, it has been a long time since anyone has talked about pancakes, offenses lines concerned about our defensive lines and running backs who punish the defense. I think Nebraska is weak physically and mentally. They need to find the heart, the taste for winning again. That takes more work than playing football.

i am from oklahoma. i follow both ok state and OU. my gosh folks, what has happened. Late 1970’s, nebraska came to stillwater and throttled the pokes. after the game i had the pleasure of talking to some nebraska people. fans with the most class no doubt. great ou nebraska wars over the years. gone for now. i’m not a callahan fan even from back with the raiders. i think he neuters every team that he coaches. he coaches soft and plays soft. sorry guys. i really do hope that it gets better for you. nebraska truly deserves better. good luck.

What is it with NU you ask? It starts right here.

“Randy York, associate athletic director for strategic communications, said Pederson would not meet with the media after the game.”

  9. Cat Fan Says:

WOW! I bet the NU faithful think Frank Solich and that “boring” option offense looks pretty good right now. I remember how the Big Red Nation cheered at the first Callahan spring game when they went 4 wide and threw on first down. Funny how things change. Be careful what you wish for, you might (did) get it. Remember Peterson upset the wagon at Pitt, and Callahan took a Super Bowl team down pretty fast in Oakland. The state of NU Football is not good for the Big 12, just ironic considering how the former staff got run off after one bad year.

  10. Cliff Says:

Cat Fan, just because they got rid of Solich and company have one year bad year does not mean things would have rebounded the next year. Things were going downhill with them as well.

Pederson made a wrong hire with Callahan and company and that is the problem. We have to have motivators and teachers that the team will believe in. These are college kids, and Callahan is trying to run it like a NFL camp it sounds like.

  11. dave christensen Says:

A 5 year extension on Callahan’s contract? In his first 3 years, he made the same excuse that the players were still learning the offense. In these last two years, are they now learning the defense? This fine group of athletes is being short changed by a coaching staff that should be coaching in the high school ranks. I will continue my 55 year support of Nebraska football when these rank amateur coaches are gone.

  12. drbordo Says:

Where is it written we have to hire a marquis coach at 2 million plus per year? There has to be plenty of young, skilled coaches just waiting for a break to showcase their abilities. Let the NFL coaches stay in the NFL. Hire an AD with vision and confidence in his own ability. Okay, maybe the first young man doesn’t work out. In two years he is gone and we look again. How is this worse than the present situation?

  13. drbordo Says:

This really hurts. From an article on MSNBC:

The folks at Nebraska might not be suffering through back-to-back defeats against Missouri (41-6) and Oklahoma State (45-15) if they had just given the head-coaching job to Bo Pelini when they had the chance.

  14. Amy Says:

I agree with MSNBC. It hurts but I agree.

  15. Neal Says:

Again, if Turner Gill can win at all in Buffalo, what could he do with the Huskers? He has the pedigree and was taught by the best football mind in year in Osborne. Now that Pederson is gone it’s one down and one to go.

  16. drbordo Says:

So…what can the Husker Community do? They can fill the stands at every game, wear their colors proudly and scream when those kids show up to play. No one leaves at half-time. Everyone stays to the end and appreciates the team effort by applause and yelling. Support is everything now and I know Huskers fans aren’t going to let those kids down. This is my position…what is yours?

  17. Jake Says:

    Ouch what a ball burner

  18. drbordo Says:

Dump Callahan now. Keeping him makes no sense at all.
