Husker BaseballLincoln, NE - Nick Sullivan had hit just 1 home run this year before yesterday’s 3-run bomb in the first.  Just like yesterday, Nick Sullivan provided another 3-run shot that put the Huskers up for good.  The Huskers (24-4-1, 10-1-1) finished the sweep over visiting Texas Tech (16-15, 4-8) with a 5-3 win on Sunday.

In fact, all the Huskers runs today came off the bat of Nick Sullivan.  In the first, just like yesterday, Mitch Abeita drew a two out walk to put two runners on before Sullivan drilled a ball to right center for a 2-run double.

After two solo shots in the 3rd and 4th of Husker starter Aaron Pribanic, Texas Tech would actually take their first lead of the weekend in the top of the 6th when a Tech double would score a runner from first.  But then Sullivan would hit his second 3-run homer in as many days to put the Huskers in front for good.

On the mound, Pribanic was decent, but struggled with control a little giving 4 free passes.  He would end up with 3 earned runs over 6 innings scattering 6 hits and striking out 6.  The final three innings would be held down by Zach Herr, Mike Nesseth, and Dan Jennings who would only allow 2 hits and strikeout 5.

The Huskers will now hit the road for a 4 game stretch starting with Iowa on Tuesday night before heading to Stillwater for a matchup with Oklahoma State.

Husker BaseballLincoln, NE - The Huskers (22-4-1, 9-1-1) continued to stiffle the bats of the Red Raiders (16-13, 4-6) en route to a 5-2 victory at Haymarket Park.  Senior Thad Weber, who entering today had only given up 1 earned run in 23 innings of Big XII pitching, struck out a career high 11 over 7.1 innings of work.

The Huskers got all the runs they would need in the first inning.  Mitch Abeita and Jake Opitz both coaxed two out walks and Junior Nick Sullivan drilled a 1-1 pitch over the left-center fence for a 3-0 lead.

The Red Raiders plate two of their own in the 2nd inning, but that was all.  The Raiders really only threatened twice after that, one in the 7th inning when Tech had runners on 2nd and 3rd with just 1 out when Weber got a groundout to the pitcher and a strikeout to end the threat.

In the 8th the Raiders would threaten again getting runners on the corners with two outs when Dan Jennings came in relief and induced an easy groundout to Craig Corriston at first.

Jennings proceeded to pitch a perfect ninth, getting a strikeout and a popout and a strikeout to seal the victory.  Jennings earned his first save and kept his scoreless streak alive at 19.2 innings.

The Huskers go for the sweep on Sunday at 1:05pm.  Junior Aaron Pribanic (2-1, 2.41) takes the hill, looking to bounce back from his rough start last week where he gave up 5 earned runs over 6 innings in a 12-3 loss to the Longhorns.

Husker BaseballLincoln, NE - Texas Tech’s Doug Thennis hit a solo shot off Johnny Dorn in the 5th.  That one short sentence describes the entire offensive output against Dorn Friday evening.   The home crowd of 6,593 watched as Dorn and the #9 Huskers (22-4-1, 8-1-1) put a muzzle on the visiting Red Raiders (16-13, 4-6)by the score of 6-2.

Dorn allowed just the 1 hit over 7.1 innings and although he walked three, he also struck out 10.  With the win, Dorn moved to 4-0 on the year with a measly 2.12 ERA and is currently 3rd in the Big XII with 48 Ks behind Kendal Volz of Baylor (50) and Missuori’s Aaron Crow (67).

At the plate, the Huskers scored the first two runs in the 2nd inning when Junior transfer Cody Neer ripped  a 1-1 pitch into right center scoring Bryce Nimmo and Craig Corriston.  In the third, the Huskers would double that lead when Jake Opitz tripled home DJ Belfonte and Mitch Abeita followed up with a double to score Opitz.

Craig Corriston answered Tech’s 1 run shot in the 5th with a solo shot of his own in the 6th on the 2nd pitch of the inning that chased starter Nathan Karns.

The Huskers will try for their 4th straight Big XII series win on Saturday at 2:05 pm at Hawks field.  Coming off his brilliant 2-hit shutout of Texas last week, Senior Thad Weber (4-1, 3.20 ERA) will look to do the same against the Red Raiders.

Husker BaseballAustin, TX - The Texas Longhorns (18-7, 5-4) finally had enough of the Husker pitching. The Longhorns came into the series with one of the best offenses in the country and until today, the Husker pitching had shut them down, allowing just 4 runs on 9 hits in the first two contests and 0 runs on 2 hits in the previous 14 innings.

Unfortunately for Husker starter Aaron Pribanic (2-1), the Longhorn bats came alive today. The Horns put up 12 runs on 14 hits as they pounded the Huskers 12-3.

With the loss, the Huskers move to 20-4-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the Big XII.

Of the few bright spots on the afternoon, Junior Cody Neer slammed a 2-run bomb in the top of the 7th to bring the Huskers within 3 at 6-3. Unfortunately, Jordan Danks answered the very same inning with a 2-run blast of his own.  Jake Opitz extended his hitting streak to 7 games with a 1 for 4 day and Craig Corriston chipped in a run and an RBI in his 2 for 4 day.

The Huskers next take the field on Tuesday as they take on the Creighton Bluejays at Omaha’s Rosenbaltt stadium. First pitch is set for 6:35 pm.

Husker BaseballAustin, TX - The #12 Texas Longhorns (17-8, 4-4) have one of the most potent offenses in the country.  Coming into this series they averaged near 9 runs per game and had a team average over .320 and tonight Thad Weber completely shut them down.  The #15 Huskers (21-3-1, 7-0-1) defeated the Longhorns 2-0 to remain undefeated in the conference and clinch the series win.

Thad allowed just 5 baserunners all night.  Two hits, two walks and 1 error was all Texas could muster on the day.  They had 1 runner reach 3rd base all night (3rd inning) and one of the two hits was the very first Texas batter of the game (Michael Torres).  On the day, Weber struck out 5 batters including the final out of the game while throwing just 108 pitches.

The Huskers offense all came in the 6th inning.  Ben Kline ripped a double to right center to start off the inning, but in a scary moment twisted his knee trying to stop at second and went down in pain.  After a few minutes the sting wore off and Kline was able to finish the game.

With one out in the 6th, Jake Mort hit a blooper to left field just in front of a diving Torres and was then able to roll into second for the double when the ball got away on the dive.  Senior Jake Opitz was then able to battle from behind in the count and coax a walk to put runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs.  Mitch Abeita then worked the count full so the runners would be running on the pitch and grounded a soft base hit right back up the middle that scored Mort and moved Opitz to third.  Corriston came up next and drilled a 0-1 pitch over the left fielder’s head for an RBI double scoring Opitz.

That was all the runs they would get, but that was more than Weber needed who only allowed 1 baserunner after the 6th.

The Huskers go for the series sweep tomorrow in Austin at 1:00 pm sending Junior Aaron Pribanic (2-0, 1.44 ERA) to the hill.

Husker BaseballAustin, TX - The #15 Huskers (20-3-1, 6-0-1) looked like they might be in for a rude awakening on Friday night as they were down 4-0 early to the #12 Texas Longhorns (17-7, 4-2).  Then the Huskers scored 14 unanswered runs between the 4th and 8th innings to down the Longhorns 14-4.

Johnny Dorn (3-0) picked up the win despite not having his best outing.  Dorn pitched just 5 innings, gave up 7 hits and 4 earned runs and struck out just 1.  With Dorn struggling hanging on to a 6-4 lead, the Huskers turned to Dan Jennings who wouldn’t allow a single baserunner for the rest of the game.  Jennings pitched 4 innings, 0 hits, 4 strikeouts and 0 walks on the day.

The Husker offense pounded out 14 hits, led true Freshman Shortstop Ben Kline out of Omaha Central broke out of a slump with a 3 for 5 3 RBI day including a two-run single with 1 out to cap a 4-run 5th that put the Huskers up for good at 5-4.  Mitch Abeita also had a great day at the plate going 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs of his own.

Jake Opitz added a solo shot before the Husker broke it open with 2 more 4-run innings in the 7th and 8th to extend the lead to 14-4.

The win was a big statement for the Huskers that they in fact are going to be a big factor in this season’s Big XII race.  The Huskers will go for the series win tomorrow at 6:00pm as the game will be seen in the midwest on Fox Sports Net.

Husker BaseballLincoln, NE - Northern Colorado Head Coach Kevin Smallcomb is probably glad to be done playing the Huskers (19-3-1, 5-0-1) for the rest of 2008.  His team has played Nebraska 6 times this season and lost all 6 for a combined 53-15.  Today, Erik Bird kept the Bears pretty quiet for 5 innings, giving up just 4 hits, 2 runs (1 unearned) and struck out 3.

Like yesterday, the offense used a huge 3rd inning to blow the game wide open.  Coming into the frame, the game was knotted at 2.  When the inning was finally over, the Husker had built up a 7-2 lead and with Bird on the mound, they were cruising.

9 different Huskers had hits today, but most notable may have been Freshman Ben Kline.  Ben has been in a rather large slump since the beginning of the Big XII season and his average that was once above .300 has plumetted all the way down to .224.

After Bird, Casey Houptman and Erik Anderson each threw 2 innings apiece to preserve the 9-4 victory.

Next up for the Huskers is a trip to Austin, TX for a battle against fellow ranked Big XII school Texas at Disch Falk field.  The game was originally slated for a night start, but due to the scheduling of Texas’s basketball team’s NCAA tournament game, the baseball game has been moved to 3:00pm.

Husker BaseballLincoln, NE - The Husker bats came alive for a big 6-run 3rd inning which was way more than Husker starter Dan Jennings who went 6 innings and gave up just 3 hits for his 3rd win of the year 10-0.  Cody Neer powered the Huskers with a 2 for 4 day and 3 RBIs while Bryce Nimmo cotributed a 2 for 3 day with 2 RBIs and scored 3 times.

The third started off with a singles from DJ Belfonte and Jake Mort before Jake Opitz doubled home Belfonte.  Mitch Abeita grounded on the infield next, but the fielder tried to throw out Mort at home and Jake slid under the tag for a 4-0 advantage.  After Craig Corriston was hit by a pitch, Bryce Nimmo doubled a 1-0 pitch to right to bring home Abeita and Opitz.  Cody Neer followed that with a 2-RBI single bringing home Corriston and Nimmo.

For Northern Colorado, former Husker Jon Klausing took the loss.  In his tough start he gave up 8 runs in just 3 innings of work.

The two teams take the field again tomorrow at 1:35 pm before the Huskers travel to Austin, Texas to take on the Texas Longhorns at Disch Faulk field.
