Lincoln, NE - Texas Tech’s Doug Thennis hit a solo shot off Johnny Dorn in the 5th.  That one short sentence describes the entire offensive output against Dorn Friday evening.   The home crowd of 6,593 watched as Dorn and the #9 Huskers (22-4-1, 8-1-1) put a muzzle on the visiting Red Raiders (16-13, 4-6)by the score of 6-2.

Dorn allowed just the 1 hit over 7.1 innings and although he walked three, he also struck out 10.  With the win, Dorn moved to 4-0 on the year with a measly 2.12 ERA and is currently 3rd in the Big XII with 48 Ks behind Kendal Volz of Baylor (50) and Missuori’s Aaron Crow (67).

At the plate, the Huskers scored the first two runs in the 2nd inning when Junior transfer Cody Neer ripped  a 1-1 pitch into right center scoring Bryce Nimmo and Craig Corriston.  In the third, the Huskers would double that lead when Jake Opitz tripled home DJ Belfonte and Mitch Abeita followed up with a double to score Opitz.

Craig Corriston answered Tech’s 1 run shot in the 5th with a solo shot of his own in the 6th on the 2nd pitch of the inning that chased starter Nathan Karns.

The Huskers will try for their 4th straight Big XII series win on Saturday at 2:05 pm at Hawks field.  Coming off his brilliant 2-hit shutout of Texas last week, Senior Thad Weber (4-1, 3.20 ERA) will look to do the same against the Red Raiders.

Austin, TX - The Texas Longhorns (18-7, 5-4) finally had enough of the Husker pitching. The Longhorns came into the series with one of the best offenses in the country and until today, the Husker pitching had shut them down, allowing just 4 runs on 9 hits in the first two contests and 0 runs on 2 hits in the previous 14 innings.

Unfortunately for Husker starter Aaron Pribanic (2-1), the Longhorn bats came alive today. The Horns put up 12 runs on 14 hits as they pounded the Huskers 12-3.

With the loss, the Huskers move to 20-4-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the Big XII.

Of the few bright spots on the afternoon, Junior Cody Neer slammed a 2-run bomb in the top of the 7th to bring the Huskers within 3 at 6-3. Unfortunately, Jordan Danks answered the very same inning with a 2-run blast of his own.  Jake Opitz extended his hitting streak to 7 games with a 1 for 4 day and Craig Corriston chipped in a run and an RBI in his 2 for 4 day.

The Huskers next take the field on Tuesday as they take on the Creighton Bluejays at Omaha’s Rosenbaltt stadium. First pitch is set for 6:35 pm.

Lincoln, NE - The Husker bats came alive for a big 6-run 3rd inning which was way more than Husker starter Dan Jennings who went 6 innings and gave up just 3 hits for his 3rd win of the year 10-0.  Cody Neer powered the Huskers with a 2 for 4 day and 3 RBIs while Bryce Nimmo cotributed a 2 for 3 day with 2 RBIs and scored 3 times.

The third started off with a singles from DJ Belfonte and Jake Mort before Jake Opitz doubled home Belfonte.  Mitch Abeita grounded on the infield next, but the fielder tried to throw out Mort at home and Jake slid under the tag for a 4-0 advantage.  After Craig Corriston was hit by a pitch, Bryce Nimmo doubled a 1-0 pitch to right to bring home Abeita and Opitz.  Cody Neer followed that with a 2-RBI single bringing home Corriston and Nimmo.

For Northern Colorado, former Husker Jon Klausing took the loss.  In his tough start he gave up 8 runs in just 3 innings of work.

The two teams take the field again tomorrow at 1:35 pm before the Huskers travel to Austin, Texas to take on the Texas Longhorns at Disch Faulk field.

Lincoln, NE - The Huskers (17-3-1, 5-0-1)  played to a 8-8 tie after 11 innings because of Oklahoma’s travel rules.   The Huskers missed a sure double play ball in the top of the 9th, but were still just 1 strike away from a 6-3 victory over the Sooners before a two-run single brought them within 1.  The Sooners took the lead just two pitches later when Aaron Baker parked a 1-0 pitch over the fence in the right.

The Huskers wouldn’t go down easy though, Senior Mitch Abeita homered to lead off the 9th and a few batters later, Dan Johnston hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Nick Sullivan to tie the game.

The Sooners again threatened in the 10th, when Mike Nesseth threw what looked to be another sure double play ball into center field.  However, the Freshman managed to get the next three batters to get out of the jam.

Early on, the Sooners jumped to a 2-1 lead after just 1 inning.  They extended that lead to 3-1 after the top half of the 5th inning. In the bottom of that frame, the Huskers battled back scoring 3 runs.  The first came from a bases loaded single from nick Sullivan and then Bryce Nimmo followed two batters later with a 2-run single of his own.  Sullivan and Nimmo extended that lead in the 7th with a sac-fly and RBI single respectively.

The tie spoiled a decent outing from Junior Aaron Pribanic.  Aaron pitched 7.2 innings and gave up just 3 runs and was in line for the win before the debacle in the 9th.

The Huskers take the field next on Tuesday when they face Northern Colorado for the 3rd time this year.  The game is slotted for a 6:35pm first pitch.  Junior Dan Jennings will most likely get the start with Eric Bird going on Wednesday for the 1:35 pm game.  The Huskers then travel to Austin to take on the Texas Longhorns for a 3 game set.

Lincoln, NE - The Huskers (17-3, 3-0) used a strong performance from Senior Thad Weber and some early offensive production to hang on to a 4-3 win over visiting Oklahoma. The win was the 5th Big XII win in a row by the Huskers who remain undefeated in the conference this season.

Weber went 7 innings and gave up 9 hits, but like Dorn last night he managed to escape trouble every time the Sooners threatened.   The Sooners managed baserunners in every inning, but Weber kept them from crossing the plate.  Dan Jennings came in for a scoreless 8th to preserve the 4-0 lead.

The Sooners desperately tried to make it a game in the 9th.  The Sooners opened the 9th with three straight hits off Erik Anderson.  Anderson then struck out the next batter, but the ball got away from catcher Mitch Abeita and allowed the first run to score.  The next batter hit an RBI infield single to bring the score to 4-2.  After Zach Herr got the next batter to popout, Mike Nesseth came in to close it out.  Nesseth threw a wild pitch on a 1-2 count to bring the Sooners within 1.  Mike then struck out the final batter to preserve the win.

The Huskers scored 3 of their runs in the bottom of the first to jump out to the early lead.  Jake Opitz accounted for 3 of the 4 runs on the day with an RBI and a run scored in the 1st and a long drive over the right field bullpen in the 7th.

The Huskers go for the sweep tomorrow at 1:00 pm with junior Aaron Pribanic  (2-0, 0.76 ERA) on the hill.

Lincoln, NE - As kids we’ve all pretended we’re at bat in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and the game on the line.  Last night, Senior Craig Corriston didn’t have to pretend.  Since Corriston hadn’t hit a home run in about 11 months and there was a strong wind blowing in from left field it seemed quite unlikely that Corriston would be able to hit one out there.  Sure enough as soon as the 2-0 pitch left the bat, all 3,616 in attendance knew the game was over and the Huskers (16-3, 4-0) would win 4-2.

From the mound Johnny Dorn might have earned the nickname of “Houdini” with his inate ability to escape seemingly every threat by OU.  It certainly wasn’t his most dominant performance, as he gave up 9 hits over 7.1 innings, struck out a season low 3, and allowed runners in scoring position in 6 of those 7 innings.  The key to his success?  The Sooners finished the day a measly 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position.

After Dorn got into a little trouble in the 7th, Zach Herr came in and shut the Sooners down.  His 1.2 innings of scoreless work allowed him to earn his second win of the year.

Nick Sullivan also helped power the Husker offense.  Not only did his 9th inning single allow Corriston to come to the plate, but he tied the game in the bottom of the 7th with a pair of RBIs of his own on a bases-loaded single. 

The win keeps the Huskers undefeated in the conference at 4-0.  They will try to keep that unbeaten record tomorrow as the Huskers take on the Sooners at Haymarket Park at 2:05 pm.

Lincoln, NE - The Huskers (15-2) and Junior lefty Dan Jennings put a damper on former Nebraska Head Coach Dave Van Horn’s first return to Lincoln with a 6-1 victory.  Coach Van Horn of course returns to Lincoln as the head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks.

The complete game by Jennings was the first of his career, much longer than his previous high of 6 innings.  Jennings scattered 5 hits, walked just 2, and struck out 7.  Not only was Jennings sharp, but the defense also managed 4 double plays, including one in the 9th, to really stiffle anything the Razorbacks could get going.  The lone run was a single to right where if DJ Belfonte’s made a good throw that drifted up the line allowing the run to score.

From the dish, the Huskers found a little power scoring 5 out of the 6 runs via the homer.  In the 2nd Nick Sullivan crushed a 2-run blast into the right field bullpen to break a 1-1 tie.  Later in the 8th, Senior Catcher Mitch Abeita hit one out with 2 on and nobody out for the final 6-1 margin.  The first run came in the first off of the bat of Senior Bryce Nimmo who enjoyed a nice 2 for 3 day.

The win was the 14th in a row by the Huskers still leaves the Huskers 12 shy of the team record for consecutive victories.  That record was set by the 1983 Husker baseball team.

The 2-game set will wrap up tomorrow at 1:00pm at Haymarket in Lincoln before the Huskers welcome the Oklahoma Sooners to the Hawks field.

Manhattan, KS -Three freshman, David Stewart, Dan Johnston, and Mike Nesseth came through in a big way for the Huskers (14-2, 3-0) to complete the three game sweep of the Kansas State Wildcats (7-10, 0-3) 5-3 in the Sunday afternoon finale.  The win was the 13th in a row for the Huskers, the longest winning streak in the past 8 seasons for the Huskers.

In the top of the 9th, all hope seemed lost.  The Huskers were down 3-2, All-American closer Daniel Edwards is on the mound for Kansas State when true freshman David Stewart ripped a double to lead off the inning for the Huskers.  Dan Johnston came in to run for Stewart and eventually scored the tying run on a DJ Belfonte sacrifice fly.

Mike Nesseth nailed down the Cats in the bottom frame and the very next inning, Dan Johnston delivered the go ahead two-run single to left to put the Huskers up for good.  Sophomore Erik Anderson came on for the bottom of the 10th and faced the minimum 3 batters on just 15 pitches to earn his 3rd save of the year.  Nesseth and Anderson have been great all year for the Huskers as they have yet to give up an earned run.

The pitching as a whole was sharp today as starter Aaron Pribanic took a no-hitter into the 5th, but gave up 2 runs (both unearned) on 2 hits, a walk and an error when 2nd baseman Jake Opitz mishandled a ball and couldn’t recover in time to get the runner.

Nebraska jumped up early on a 2-run blast by senior catcher Mitch Abeita on a 1-0 pitched that he drilled over the left field wall.  KSU battled back with the two unearned in the 5th by Pribanic and the followed with another off reliever Zach Herr in the 6th after a walk, a sacrifice and an RBI single to take the lead.

Nick Sullivan and Jake Opitz both had a good day at the plate.  Opitz went 3 for 5 with a pair of runs scored and Sullivan went 3 for 3.

The Huskers return home to begin a two-game series against former Nebraska coach Dave Van Horn’s Arkansas Razorbacks beginning Tuesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m.

Manhattan, KS - The Huskers (13-2, 2-0) give Thad Weber plenty of runs to work with as they continued their winning ways against Big XII North opponent Kansas State (7-8, 0-2) 11-4.  Thad Weber, who has continued to improve since the rough outing in his first start versus Stanford, threw 7 innings and allowed just 4 hits and a run while striking out a career high 9. 

Thad kept the Cats guessing all day long, striking out 4 of the first 6 batters he faced. In the process, he lowed his ERA from 7.16 to 5.40 and increased his win/loss record to 3-1.

The Husker offense certainly showed up to play as well.  Craig Corriston and Jake Opitz led the way with a combined 7 for 9 with 5 RBIs as the Husker as a team pounded out 16 hits.  Opitz hit a 2-run homer in the third inning gave the Huskers a 3-0 lead.  Corriston came back in the next inning and pounded a two-run double with runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs to break it open to a 6-0 lead.

Opitz then came back with a sacrifice fly in the 5th for a 7-0 Husker advantage.  The run support was more than enough for Weber.  He allowed a single run to plate in the 7th, before turning it over to the Husker bullpen.  Dan Jennings and Joe Hatasaki had a little trouble in the 8th and 9th, giving up 3 runs, but the damage had already been done as the Huskers plated 4 in the top of the 8th for an 11-1 lead.

Corriston, who started the season very modestly (sub .200 average after a few games) finished 4 for 5 on the day bumping up his average to a stellar .396.  His hot hitting all week (10 for 15) has been a much needed push in the middle of this Husker lineup.

The Huskers send Aaron Pribanic (2-0, 0.96 ERA) to the mound to finish the series with Kansas State today at 1 pm.   Pribanic has thrown two complete games in his first to starts and looks to continue his hot hand on the mound.

Manhattan, KS - The Huskers (12-2, 1-0) won their 11th straight game 2-1 versus the Kansas State Wildcats in a great Friday night Big XII pitchers duel.  The Huskers scored both of their runs on sacrifice fly’s including the go ahead run in the top of the 9th when Mitch Abeita scored on Craig Corristons fly ball to center field.

On the mound, Johnny Dorn continued his sharp start to the season with 1 run over 7 innings of work and 5 strikeouts.  The bullpen for the Huskers continued to be sharp as Zach Herr (1-0) gets the win and Erik Anderson (2) picks up the save working the last two innings for the Huskers.

At the plate, the Huskers were led by Senior Bryce Nimmo who had yet another multi hit day going 2 for 3 and scoring the first run for the Huskers.  Nimmo was brought in by Freshman David Stewart who lined to center deep enough for the speedy Nimmo. 

Before Corriston’s game-winning RBI, Abeita worked his way around the bases on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch to get to third.

 The win was the first game of a 3 game series with KSU to open the Big XII season.  The two teams play again tomorrow at 2:00pm where the Huskers will send Thad Weber to the mound at 2:00 pm.
