Three more players from the Nebraska Baseball team were drafted in the 2007 MLB Draft today.
Matt Foust and Tony Watson were both picked by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Foust in the sixth round and Watson in the ninth round. They are both excited about starting out in the minor leagues with each other. Should help them with the nerves and everything else that goes along with the minor leagues.
Luke Wertz was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 13th round.
Good luck to you all as you will soon be starting a new baseball career!
Nebraska nearly overcame a six-run deficit, but fifth-ranked Arizona State pulled away in the later innings to post a 19-7 victory late Sunday in the title game of the NCAA Tempe Regional.
The Sun Devils, who upped their record to 46-13, will now take on Mississippi in a Super Regional matchup next weekend, while the Huskers, who reached a regional title game for the sixth time in the last eight years, finished the 2007 campaign with a 32-27 record.
Trailing 9-3, the Huskers scored a run in the sixth and used an RBI triple by Craig Corriston and a RBI single by Andrew Brown off of ASU starter Josh Satow to pull within three runs. After an error and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with no outs, Sun Devil closer Jason Jarvis came and struck out Andy Gerch before Jeff Tezak’s grounder to short made it a 9-7 game. Jarvis, who struck out five in three innings of no-hit relief for his 11th save, escaped additional trouble by getting Bryce Nimmo to ground out to end the threat.
The offense came out for the Nerbaska Cornhuskers this afternoon as they avenged a earlier loss to UC-Riverside with a nice 11-1 thumping this afternoon in the Tempe regional.
The Huskers will now play Arizona State this evening. If the Huskers are able to get past ASU they will then play them again tomorrow.
GO BIG RED!!!
The Huskers didn’t get off to the right foot yesterday in NCAA Regional play as they lost to the #2 seed UC-Riverside by the score of 10-5. The Huskers got off to a good start but could not hold onto it as the pitchers gave up 10 walks in the ballgame and anytime you walk that many batters, they are eventually going to come around and score.
Nebraska will now face Monmouth this afternoon. Monmouth played Arizona State pretty tough before falling 5-3. The Huskers really need to pick up this win or it will be another 2 and out of regional play just like last year.
Today that NCAA annouced the field for NCAA Regional play that will begin on Friday. The Huskers will be traveling down to Tempe and take part in the regional that will be hosted by the Arizona State Sun Devils.
The Huskers will face UC-Riverside in their first game. The Huskers received the #3 seed for the regional. Arizona State and Monmouth will battle it out in the other game.
The team is in a really hard regional and it is going to be very tough for them to make it out of it, but a upset here and there and they just might suprise us! Lets go get em! GO BIG RED!!!
Oklahoma City, Okla. – Freshman DJ Belfonte went 2-for-4 and scored twice, but Nebraska’s late-inning comeback fell short in a 5-4 loss to fifth-ranked Texas at the Big 12 Championship Saturday afternoon.
The Huskers (30-25) had the tying runner on base in each of the last three innings, but could not capitalize against Longhorn closer Randy Boone, who got UT out of each jam, including a bases-loaded situation after NU pulled to within a run to, earn his 13th save.
Nebraska used an opportunistic offense and strong pitching performances from Tony Watson and Matt Foust to knock off No. 11 Texas A&M, 5-3, at the Big 12 Championship Wednesday afternoon at the Bricktown Ballpark.
Â
Watson (6-4) allowed two runs over 5.1 innings of work to pick up his first win since April 29. The left-hander got out of several early jams, as the Aggies left runners in scoring position in each of the first six innings against Watson and in seven of nine inning overall. Foust earned his seventh save by going the final 3.2 innings, highlighted by a bases-loaded strikeout of Blake Stouffer in the eighth to preserve NU’s 4-3 lead at the time.

They will have to get off to a good start against Texas A&M if they want any shot in the tournament. Along with the Aggies, the Huskers have Texas and Kansas State in their pool.
