Nebraska vs Kansas State RecapThe Nebraska Football team looked like one of the teams from the mid 90’s as they rolled up over 600 yards of offense against Kansas State in a old fashioned 56-28 butt kicking. K-State had no answer to the Huskers rushing attack and could not stop the passing attack either so it was a very long day for the fans down in Manhattan.

Senior quarterback Joe Ganz led the way for the Huskers as he passed for 270 yards and two touchdowns. Ganz also ran the ball 11 times for 95 more yards as he pretty much did whatever he wanted against the Wildcat defense. The one blemish for Ganz was a pick six interception as the game opened up but after that it was all Huskers.

Mike McNeill and Todd Peterson both caught touchdown passes from Ganz. Peterson’s grab was a give yard td and McNeill’s a 18 yard td. Both of the receiving td’s came in the second quarter.

What was suprising to me was how well the Huskers ran the ball. Ganz led the way with 95 yards and he was followed by  Roy Helu Jr. (72 yards), Marcus Mendoza (58 yards), Quentin Castille (51 yards) and Marlon Lucky who finished with 47 yards. It was a balanced rushing attack and everyone carried the ball well. Helu Jr. and Ganz both rushed for two touchdowns while Castille added one of his own.

On the defensive side of the ball the d-line once again dominated for their second straight game. The blackshirts held the Wildcats to just 59 yards rushing  and 188 passing yards. Sixth-three of those yards came on one long pass play that Anthony West got beat on so that shows you just how dominate the blackshirts were against Josh Freeman and the rest of the Wildcats.

The Huskers will now have their bye week this weekend and then be ready to face off against Colorado next Friday. Let’s pack Memorial Stadium loud and send the Seniors off with a blowout victory over the Buffaloes!

Nebraska vs Kansas State PreviewThe Nebraska Football team will be taking a bus down to Manhattan, Kansas on Friday as they get set to take on the Kansas State Wildcats Saturday afternoon. The Huskers are hoping to come away with another Big 12 conference victory and keep the momentum building as they get closer to the regular season finale with Colorado.

The Huskers come into the game with a 6-4 overall record and 3-3 record in the Big 12 while the Wildcats are 4-6 and 1-5 in the conference. The Wildcats don’t have a lot to play for as they already know that Ron Prince won’t be back as head coach next year. Beat writers in Manhattan have already said that they feel that some of the players have already given up on the season and they would not be surprised to see a Husker blowout victory.

For the Huskers to come away with a victory they will need to slow down Josh Freeman. They need to get pressure on him and force him to make some bad decisions with the football which he has done this year. Freeman is hoping to have a big day against the Huskers as he is looking to improve his draft stock if he does indeed choose to enter the draft after this season so I expect him to really bring it Saturday afternoon.

I see the Huskers coming out and really piling up the yards against the K-State as they are ranked 110 nationally as they give up 451 yards per game. Look for Joe Ganz, Roy Helu Jr., and Nate Swift to have huge days against this defense

Also look for Latravis Washington to get a lot more playing time this week as he helps fill in for Cody Glenn who has been suspended. The Huskers will be without Phillip Dillard and probably Lydon Murtha as well as they are both still injured.

I’m looking at a Nebraska victory with the final score being 42-27

Nebraska vs Kansas Game RecapThe Nebraska Cornhuskers picked up a huge win Saturday afternoon over the visiting Kansas Jayhawks. The Huskers got great performances from Ndamukong Suh and Roy Helu Jr. as they came away with a 45-35 win and improved to 6-4 on the season. Suh and 12 tackles and 2.5 sacks while Helu Jr. ran the ball for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Suh also got a touchdown pass from Joe Ganz when he lined up as fullback late in the game.

The win was Nebraska’s 20th straight victory over Kansas at Memorial Stadium dating back to 1968.  The win also gave the Husker’s their much needed sixth with of the season to make them bowl eligible.

Husker quarterback Joe Ganz completed 28-of-37 passes for 324 yards and three touchdowns. It was the fourth time in the last five games that Ganz has thrown for over 300 yards. He did have one interception and was sacked twice as well. Overall it was a pretty good game for Ganz, he just needs to work on getting rid of the ball a little quicker to avoid the sacks. Chris Brooks, Nate Swift, and Suh all caught touchdown passes from Ganz. It was Brook’s and Suh’s first touchdown receptions of their careers

Mike McNeill also caught a touchdown pass from Marlon Lucky. Lucky was lined up in the Joker formation and faked a run up the middle and then did a “Tim Tebow like” pass to McNeill who was wide open in the middle of the endzone.

I was very surprised with how well the defensive line played in the game. Suh was a beast all game long, while Zach Potter and Pierre Allen both played well as well. They kept pressure on Todd Reesing all day. Reesing was still able to pass for three touchdowns and 304 yards but you can’t really blame the d-line for those yards.

The defensive backs still need a lot of work as they did give up some big plays and missed some tackles. The missed tackles and terrible angles are hurting the defense in every game and I doubt we see anything different this season. Problems in the secondary are just something that everyone is going to have to get used to for the remainder of the season in my opinion.

Right now look for the Huskers to possibly be playing in the Sun Bowl. Sun Bowl officials were in Lincoln for the game and they would love to have the Huskers. The Sun Bowl committee is also honoring Tom Osborne this year by electing him into the Sun Bowl Hall Of Fame so they will really be pushing to have the Huskers in the game.

Up next for the Huskers will be a road game against the Kansas State Wildcats. The game is once again on pay per view and will start at 2:30 CST. Time to break out the credit card one more time Husker fans.

Nebraska vs OklahomaI’m not really sure where to start blogging after watching the Sooners roll to a 62-28 victory Saturday night against the Huskers. Things happened so fast before Husker fans knew it, it was already 21-0 Oklahoma. Two interceptions and a fumble by the Husers put them in a deep hole that they were never able to get out of.

Pretty much every aspect of the game was struggle for the Huskers. It wasn’t just the offense or the defense, even special teams played terrible. Multiple times the Sooners were starting at mid-field or on their side of the field because the Huskers kickoff and punt coverage teams played terrible.

There was really only one highlight for the Huskers and that was Roy Helu who ran for 157 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Helu carried the running attack for the Huskers as Marlon Lucky was sidelined with a injury in the game and Quentin Castille fumbled the ball on a mis-handle by Joe Ganz and Castille.

I found it pretty interesting after the game that Coach Pelini did not allow his players to talk to interviews. He was clearly pissed off with the way the game went and did want the media asking the players any questions about the game. He directed everything at himself once again but at some point, he can’t be taking all the blame after every loss.

The Huskers will have to forget about this blowout loss as they will now start preparing for Kansas. It was announced that the Nebraska / Kansas game will be played at 1:30 CST and will only be available on PPV. Had the Huskers played a little better last night I’m sure we would not have had the Kansas game on PPV. So now most Husker fans will probably shell out the $30 for the game and hope for a better outcome.

Stay in their Husker fans…

Nebraska vs BaylorIt’s almost time for another Nebraska Football game and this week we have the Baylor Bears coming into Lincoln to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Baylor comes into the game with a 3-4 overall record and a 1-2 record in the Big 12 conference. The only team that both teams have played is Iowa State and the Bears defeated the Cyclones 38-10.

The one player on the Baylor roster that really stands out is freshman quarterback Robert Griffin. Griffin has passed for 1271 yards and nine touchdowns on the year so far. He can hurt you with his legs and his arm. Griffin is one of the fastest players the Huskers defense will play against so they need to *spy* or *lock* in home him on every play with at least one player in my opinion.

The Bears defense will give up the big plays through the air so I expect Joe Ganz to have a monster game passing the ball. I wouldn’t be suprised if we see him throw it 30 times especially if it works early in the game. Marlon Lucky, Quentin Castille, and Roy Helu Jr. will still get their touches but I expect Ganz to be the big guy for the Huskers.

Coach Pelini said that the team had another great of practice and that makes three straight weeks he has made that comment. The Huskers have played good in the last two games so I don’t expect anything to change on Saturday. Baylor has not won in Lincoln since the 1956 season and the overall series is 9-1 infavor of the Huskers.

My prediction is Nebraska 35 Baylor 21

Nebraska FootballIn less then 24 hours Nebraska will face off against Iowa State in Ames. It will be interesting to see if the Huskers build off their loss down in Lubbock last Saturday or if they will play sluggish. As a team they will be trying to break a three game losing streak and pick up their fourth victory of the season.

For a victory the Huskers are going to have to be able to run the ball. I think it is that simple against the Cyclones. The offensive line needs to cut down on the penalties and open up holes for the running backs. I expect Marlon Lucky and Roy Helu Jr. to both be around 60-75 yards rushing each with Quentin Castille adding another 30-40 yards. It all comes down to how well the line is blocking and if they stop with all the holding penalties.

Reports are saying that Cyclones will try to slow down the Huskers similar to what the Huskers did to Texas Tech last week. I don’t see that working because the Husker defense will step up and make some plays. Iowa State cannot pass the ball like Tech did last week, and they can’t even run the ball as good. The Huskers will shut down the run and force Iowa State to pass which will cause turnovers in my opinion.

The Huskers should have Phillip Dillard and Cody Glenn both back at linebacker but expect to see Matt Holt and Blake Lawrence in there as well.

My prediction: Huskers 35 Iowa State 21

NebraskaThe game plan that the Husker coaching staff drew up to stop Chase Daniel and the Missouri Tigers sure didn’t work as Missouri clobbered the Huskers on Saturday night by the score of 52-17. Missou jumped out to a huge lead in the first quarter and never looked back as they won in Lincoln for the first time in 30 years.

The defensive scheme that the staff drew up didn’t work out because they were unable to get pressure on Daniel and it also hoped up huge running lanes which the Tigers took advantage of. With three linemen, and then a roaming defensive end, the Tigers use the huge running gaps to run for 201 yards and passed for another 261 yards. It seemed like we had no linebackers out there and with the secondary getting blown up on most passing plays it was a very long night. There just wasn’t enough speed on the defense for the Huskers to keep up with the Tigers and it clearly showed.

The Huskers offense started off good with Joe Ganz hitting Nate Swift in the endzone for a 20 yard touchdown. But the Huskers would only score 3 points in the second quarter and then did not score again until at the end of the game on a 20 yard touchdown pass to Menelik Holt.

The offensive line played terrible once again. They could not give Ganz enough time to make all of his reads, and they also did not open up any running lanes for the backs. Marlon Lucky led the rushers with 46 yards on 14 carries. Quentin Castille had 12 carries for 26 yards. Roy Helu Jr. finished up the rushing attack with 11 yards on five carries. The backs were getting hit just after they got the ball and they pretty much had no chance to break away and make a big play.

Coach Pelini had this to say after the game:

“I’m not used to losing,” NU head coach Bo Pelini said. I’m not used to getting beat soundly. Once again, that’s my fault. Yes, damn right, yes, I am embarrassed. I apologize to the team, I apologize to the state of Nebraska, I apologize to everybody associated with the University of Nebraska football (team) and it’s my responsibility. I was hired to do a job and I didn’t do that job tonight.”

It’s going to take time that is for sure. Husker nation needs to stay behind this team and coaching staff. Don’t look for thigns to turn around quickly because they have to play another spread offense as they play the pass happy Texas Tech Red Raiders this coming Saturday. Hopefully we can see some improvement as the Huskers play their first road game of the season.

Stay positive Husker fans.

NebraskaWell I am finally back at home after the dissapointing lose to Virginia Tech on Saturday night. The Hokies played “Beamer Ball” to the fullest as they scored on special teams and did a lot of little things to beat the Nebraska Cornhuskers 35-30.

Things got off to a rough start as the Hokies blocked Nebraska’s first punt of the game out of the endzone to give the Hokies the 2-0 lead. They never looked back as they quickly scored a touchdown off a Joe Ganz interception to take a 9-0 lead.

Ganz finished the night 17-of-26 for 281 yards and two touchdowns but did have the costly interception. Ganz made a few bad reads at the line of scrimmage and didn’t get rid of the ball when he needed to a couple of times that really hurt the team. What really hurt the team on the offensive side of the ball however was the lack of push from the offensive line and the lack of a running game.

Once again the line did not open up any holes for the running backs as Marlon Lucky only had 17 yards on eight carries. Roy Helu Jr. once again led the running backs with yards as he finished with 21 yards on four touches and one touchdown. You just can’t sit back and expect to beat a stingy defense like the Hokies had when you can’t run the ball.

On the defensive side, it was a very poor game by the linebackers and secondary. We all knew it would be a tough year for the secondary but I didn’t expect it to be this bad to be honest. Larry Asante was out of position and gave up big plays way to often. The linbackers missed tackles like crazy and always seemed to be out of position. (After the game, Coach Ekeler took the blame for having his players out of position) The defensive line played very good I though. Zach Potter led the team with six tackles, three of which were for a loss and also half a sack.

The biggest play of the game for the Huskers came in the fourth quarter when punt returner Nate Swift took back a 88 yard punt for a touchdown that got the Huskers back in position to win the game. However, with less then a minute left in the game after forcing the Hokies to punt, Ganz hit Todd Peterson in the middle of the field and was stripped of the ball and Virignia Tech recovered.  Even had Peterson held onto the ball, I think the clock would have ran out before Ganz would have been able to spike the ball.

Congrats to Virginia Tech as they won a tough game on the road. Nebraska just made to many stupid penalties and to many mental mistakes on defense. Things sure don’t get any easier either as the Missouri Tigers will be coming into Lincoln for another night game on Saturday.

The secondary and offensive line better have a great week of practice or things are going to ugly pretty fast against the Tigers.

NebraskaThe Nebraska Football team is ready to face off against New Mexico State on Saturday afternoon, and I’m ready to watch another husker victory. I will be watching to see if there is any improvement on the offensive line and how well the secondary plays against the pass happy Aggies.

I really think this is the game that the running game gets going. Lydon Murtha is back and will start the game and I really feel that will be a big help on the offensive line. With the aggies playing a 3-3-5 defense, it is going to be a lot of 4-5 yard pickups on the ground I think. If Marlon Lucky, Quentin Castille, and Roy Helu Jr. can make a few people miss, those four and five yard runs will be turned into 10 and 15 yarders.

Also look for Castille to line up in the fullback position a little bit with Lucky or Helu behind him. Thomas Lawson will be out for the game as he had his appendix removed earlier in the week.

On the defensive side of the ball the secondary needs to play better and tackle better. They are going to have plenty of chances as the Aggies like to throw the ball a lot. It will be their first game of the year so I expect their qb to make some mistakes and Nebraska needs to take of those advantages. If the defensive line can get pressure on the qb, it’s going to be a long night for the Aggies.

My prediction is 42-17 in favor of the huskers. Leave us a comment and let us know your prediction!

NebraskaIt was another struggle for the Nebraska Cornhuskers as they had plenty of troubles with San Jose State on Saturday afternoon. The Huskers had a small lead in the second half until they scored 21 un-answered points to beat the Sparans 35-12. A win is a win but this was sure an ugly one.

The game turned around with 12:07 left in the game and the Huskers only up 14-12. Niles Paul returned a 85 yard kickoff back for a touchdown to extend the Huskers lead to nine points. After Paul’s huge kickoff return, the Huskers got a 14 yard touchdown by Roy Helu Jr, and a two yard touchdown by running back Marlon Lucky. The cornhuskers poured it on in the fourth quarter to make it looks a little better on the scoreboard but they sure can’t be to happy with the win.

All three Nebraska running backs scored in the game. Quentin Castille scored the Huskers first td with a three yard run in the first quarter. I’m still not happy with how the running backs performed, or the offensive line for that matter. There just wasn’t very many holes and the o-line should have been domination the smaller spartans d-line.

On the defensive side of the ball, Ndamukong Suh intercepted a bal and ran it back for a 49 yard touchdown. The d-line of the Huskers played pretty good but will be without Barry Turner who broke his leg early in the first quarter. Pierre Allen will now need to step up and take Turner’s starting spot. Look for Turner to apply for a medical redshit and be back next year.

Joe Ganz had a decent game as he was 17-25 for 216 yards. He went without a touchdown pass for the first time in his five career starts, and he did throw one interception. Nebraska senior wide receivers Nate Swift (6 rec., 70 yards) and Todd Peterson (4 rec., 59 yards) combined for 10 catches in the game.

The secondary of the Huskers still scares me a little bit. Larry Asante is going for the big hit everytime out there it seems like and he is making way to many mistakes. He needs to settle and down and get back to fundamentals and learn how to tackle correctly. You don’t have to light someone up on every play to have a good game.

The Huskers will need to have a good week of practice and and practice running the ball more in my opinion to have a good game on Saturday. I’d love to see a good game out the offense, defense, and special teams against New Mexico State. Kickoff will be at 5 p.m. central time.

GO BIG RED!
