It doesn’t come as much of a surprise to many, but expect Danny Langsdorf to be announced as the next offensive coordinator of Nebraska football. Langsdorf just finished his first season as the quarterback coach of the New York Giants, but had been the offensive coordinator at Oregon State from 2005-2013.

Langsdorf will join ex Beaver assistants defensive coaches Mark Banker and Trent Bray, offensive assistant Mike Cavanaugh and special teams coordinator Bruce Read in Lincoln.

As expected, Nebraska defensive end Randy Gregory has declared for the upcoming NFL Draft. Gregory is expected to be a top 10 and is on Mel Kipers top 5 big board. With good combine numbers, Gregory could shoot up as high as the #3 slot.

Gregory was a first-team All-Big Ten pick as a junior after leading the Cornhuskers with seven sacks. He was fourth on the team with 54 tackles, including 10 for losses. He also blocked two kicks. He missed or was limited in four games because of injury. However, it wasn’t all about the numbers as many times Gregory was double teamed and the opposing teams would run away from him every time they could.

Randy will surely be missed as the team will be very short handed at the DE position moving into the 2015 season.

Well the 2014 Nebraska football season has come to an end. We seen a team and coaching staff go through a roller coaster season that quite a few of us fans thought would happen. In the end things didn’t work out for the coaches, players or us fans. Coaches were fired, new coaches have been hired, players graduated, and some players are moving onto the NFL. Right there is damn near what every division 1 football program goes through.

As I sat at home watching the Holiday Bowl vs USC the other night I was thinking to myself, wow this is the last game of the season. This is the last time we will see Ameer Abdullah and Kenny Bell wear the Nebraska helmet and jersey while playing for the university. It was also the the last game we would see 95% of the coaching staff as only Coach Warren has been retained by new appointed head coach Riley. I was proud of team and the coaching staff as well as I thought they played vs USC. I was predicting a loss of 10 points but the Huskers had a shot at the end to pull off the upset. Props to those players and coaching staff that were at the Holiday Bowl.

Moving forward into the 2015 season we will see a coaching staff come to shape. Coach Riley will have a quite a few of his buddies / ex coaches on the staff. (Please don’t let this end up like Bo and his buddies), on the staff. We will have a fierce quarterback competition going through spring ball and I would expect open competition at every position on both sides of the ball. It’s time for the younger players to step up and I just hope that Coach Riley puts the best player out on the field. I don’t care if you are 5 star recruit or a walk on from Western Nebraska, the best player needs to be on the field.

It will be an interesting time heading forward and I can’t wait for spring ball. I hope to also be blogging more on the site here than I did during the season. Family, work and other things got in the way of keeping the blog active as much as I would have liked. However, the Twitter account is going strong @NebSports.Com so please check us out on Twitter especially if you like football, beer, bourbon and horse racing!

Wow, what a day and night it was in Lincoln this past Saturday for myself and my wife. We got started on the road Friday morning to make the seven hour drive to Lincoln and checked out the Rail Yard area for food and drinks. Came away very impressed with the area!

After the rain stopped Saturday morning we ventured out ended up grabbing a parking spot at 10th and N for $30 bucks. Looks like the prices have went up since I last parked in this lot and they said no tailgating? What the heck, it was an open area and not garage. Good thing we had plans to head over to the Lincoln Journal Star lot where we had some friends that had a spot there.

Tailgated for five or so hours with hundreds  of Husker and Hurricane fans. Everyone was getting a long great and there were zero problems. Plenty of food and drinks to go around just like tailgating should be. (Hint, not like down on the reservation lot where the cops showed up etc). Be smarter people!

On to the game. Wow, Memorial Stadium was rocking from the tunnel walk all through the game. The tunnel walk was one of the best ones I had though and the 94 team coming through the tunnel once again was a great sight. I’m sure those players and coaches really enjoyed doing that one more time.

You could tell what the game plan was for Nebraska. Run Run Run and hope to wear down the Miami line. The Hurricanes were primarily playing a 4-3 defense but had to spread the linebackers out to cover a slot receiver which really opened up the middle of the field for Ameer Abdullah. Not sure why Miami didn’t roll the safeties up closer and force Beck to call more passing plays..

With Abdullah running wild, for the tune of 229 yards on 35 carries and two total touchdowns the Nebraska offense put up 41 points vs the Hurricanes 31 points. The offensive line played good and the wide outs did an exceptional job of blocking out on the edge.

It was the defense however that was the turning point in the game. Trevor Roach forced a Duke Johnson fumble which Josh Mitchell scooped up and took back for a 57 yard touch down. From that point forward, the game got very chipping with the Hurricanes picking up five personal foul penalties and trying to start fights all over the field. Thug U at their best…

The blackshirts weren’t their best on the field but they played well enough to get the win. The linebackers were the one group that I thought had a rough night minus the Roach forced fumble. Duke Johnson was a matchup nightmare for the linebackers and it is something that the guys really need to work on. Better angles and tackling in the open field. They better get that fixed before Saturday as Illinois will be coming to town and will be trying the same thing on offense.

Overall it was a battle by both teams and Nebraska came out on top. Next years game down in Miami is going to be a scary one. Not only for the team, but also the fans in my opinion. I will not be making that trip I have already decided. I just don’t want to be there for the the mess that could happen.

We had seats in section 108 and loved it there. Great fans all around us. No shut up and sit down comments as everyone was into the game just as it should be. By the way, make sure you go up from your seats if you need to use the bathroom or grab some concessions. Much faster than going down the stairs and back down to the ground level.

Nebraska 41 – Miami 31. GBR! @NEBSPORTS

Nebraska had no problems when they kicked off the 2014 season vs Florida Atlantic in Lincoln. Behind an explosive offensive performance, the Cornhuskers put up 55 points while limiting the Owls to only seven. Starters primarily played until the middle of the 3rd quarter or the score could have even been worse.

Ameer Abdullah led the Huskers with 232 yards rushing and one touchdown. Those stats would have been even more but Ameer had a couple of plays called back due to holding penalties in the first quarter. It was one hell of a day for the Senior tail back.

It wasn’t just the Ameer show on offense. Behind quarterback Tommy Armstrong, the big red machine tallied 784 total yards of offense. Armstrong was 15 of 29 passing for 271 yards and two touchdowns. One of those completions was to sticky fingers Jordan Westerkamp has he hauled in a tipped pass behind his back while keeping a foot down a long the sideline. The play was SportsCenter top play from the first Saturday of college football.

I thought defense as a whole played well. It was against a very average offensive team from the Owls so it is hard to tell how well the unit really played. There were some mental break downs and wr’s that were left wide open. Those things will have to get fixed as the guys get more game time under themselves.

One thing to pay attention to going forward is the knee injury that happened to end Randy Gregory. Gregory went out early in the game and actually had his knee scooped early this week to clear up the damage that was an older injury that flared up. Gregory will be out this Saturday against McNeese State but hopes to be back the following week.

Overall I was happy, and that included watching the game a second time. There is definitely things to work on, but for the first game this season, the guys showed up and beat a team like they should be them. There wasn’t no playing down to your opponent. They went out there and dominated BIG RED STYLE!

Good news Husker fans! A couple of conference games as well as a visiting trip to Fresno St. have been announced with game times and the Huskers will be playing under the lights.

The Sept. 13 football game at Fresno State will be televised in prime time on the CBS Sports Network and will kick off at 9:30 p.m. Central time, the Mountain West Conference announced on Thursday. This will be a tough game for the Huskers at night as Fresno St. was 11-2 last season but do lose their stud quarterback in Carr. I am glad for this game time as it won’t have the players playing in as hot of heat in the late afternoon / early evening.

The Sept. 20 game vs Miami in Lincoln has also been delegated as a night game. Kickoff will be slated for 7:00 p.m. Central time. I’ve personally booked my hotel room for this game already and recommend other fans do the same if you plan on staying any where close to downtown. I can’t wait for the Hurricanes to come to down as there will be a lot of talk of the history between the two programs and the Orange bowls etc.

The third game that has been announced so far for a night kick off is when the Huskers travel to Michigan St. on Oct. 4. This will be a true challenge on the road. Any conference game on the road is tough but when you throw in a night game and a raucous crowd, expect some weird things to happen.

The current 2014 schedule and kickoff times as of 4/17/2014 looks like this:

Aug. 30: Florida Atlantic
Sept. 6: McNeese State
Sept. 13: at Fresno State, 9:30 p.m.
Sept. 20: Miami (Fla.), 7 p.m.
Sept. 27: Illinois
Oct. 4: at Michigan State, 7 p.m.
Oct. 11: BYE
Oct. 18: at Northwestern
Oct. 25: Rutgers
Nov. 1: Purdue
Nov. 8: BYE
Nov. 15: at Wisconsin
Nov. 22: Minnesota
Nov. 28 (Fri.): at Iowa
Dec. 6: Big Ten championship game

So I’ve been pretty quite on the blog this season as it’s been such an up and down season for the Cornhuskers and their coaching staff. Blow out losses, hat swipes at line judges and the same mistakes over and over have been frustrating. The one thing I have liked all season long however is the fight that the coaches and players have showed. The players have not given up at all and played decent despite all of the injuries as of late.

The fans are split on what should happen with the coaching staff especially head coach Bo Pelini. Should he be fired? Should he stay and man up and make changes to his assistants? Is the A.D. even man enough to make a big boy move and fire a head coach that will be owed close to 8 million dollars and then also pay out his assistants and then go out and spend big boy dollars on a head coach and new assistants?

After the audio was released last night about Bo not wanting to tape his tv show I figured he was all but gone. And he may still be but this statement from A.D. Shawn Eichorst says Bo is good for now and sounds like he will be through the bowl game.

“My approach has always been to not comment publicly about our coaches until their full seasons are complete, as I strongly believe it is unfair and counter to best practices. However, given the volume of unfounded speculation and conjecture about our head football coach, I want to reaffirm what I have said many times since I have arrived at the University of Nebraska — that I positively respect, appreciate and support our football student-athletes, coaches and staff, as we do everyone in the Husker family. We very much look forward to our upcoming bowl game and Coach Pelini continuing to lead our program in the future.”

Hmm so if he is ok to stay through the bowl game, why not come out and say Bo Pelini will be the coach of the Nebraska football team next season and everyone can move on. Including the recruits who are always waiting to be told what is going on. The bowl game shouldn’t be a game that is a fire him or not type of game in my opinion.

So I’m here now saying I have no idea what will be going on. No clue if Bo will still be the head coach following the bowl game or not. If not, make the change now and lets move on. If not, come out and say yes Bo will be here next season. If thats the case, Bo needs to step up and make some big boy decisions and get rid of some “friends” that are assistants…

Looking things over, 2015 will definitely be a tough schedule but things should ease up in the 2016 season. Should be an exciting time for Husker football playing the likes of Miami and Tennessee as well as the Big10 games. Kinda weird how Wisconsin got back on the schedule very quickly but we do miss out on Ohio State.

Nebraska announced that the football team will be playing Idaho State on September 22nd as they finished up the schedule for the 2012 season. Yep, Idaho State who won only two games last season. Idaho State who is also a FCS/Division 1-AA team. Would have been nice to at least play a legit FCS team but the school has to guarantee another home game and one that is as close to a win as possible.

Other games were also announced today. In 2014, Nebraska will face off against Florida Atlantic. In 2015 BYU will come to Lincoln. South Alabama will also make the trip to Lincoln in 2015 as well as 2019.

Ouch, that wasn’t the way Nebraska wanted to end the 2011-2012 football season. South Carolina pulled away in the second half to defeat the Cornhuskers 30-13 down in Orlando at the Capital One Bowl. It was a crazy game that saw a blocked PAT that was returned for a two points, two future first round draft picks ejected and many missed opportunities for the Huskers.

The game turned on Nebraska when Gamecocks receiver Alshon Jeffery leaped over the Nebraska defenders and then launched himself into the end zone on a hail mary pass to put South Carolina up 16-13. That play gave all the momentum to South Carolina and they came out in the second half and punished Nebraska up and down the field.

After the game, there was talk about communication problems in the second half as the team went to a silent count. Nebraska had nine penalties, including four false starts and one delay of game while only picking up five first downs in the second half. Martinez said he was unable to get the cadence calls to the line in time due the crowd noise. Hmm maybe that should have been practiced a little bit more between Martinez and the line? Or have the coaching staff possibly signal it in with the play?

Not a whole lot to talk about on the positive side of things unfortunately. It was down right en embarrassing game for coaches, the team and also the fans. It’s going to be another long break that will have many Husker fans wondering which direction this team is headed. I’m hoping for a good ending to the recruiting class and then some good spring practices. There is plenty of people coming back on offense that there should be no reason the offense won’t put up better numbers. I think the question will be how will the defense play after losing Alfonzo Dennard, LaVonte David and Jared Crick…
