I don’t write or talk much about the Nebraska basketball team as you have probably figured out. Well we have a must read article that Greg Doyel from CBS put out this morning.

Greg talks about what athletic director Tom Tom Osborne needs to do for the basketball team. That is throw a lot of money and a big time coach that players will want to play for. Don’t go for the cheapest mid-major successful coach like Nebraska has done the past two hires. It’s time to make a splash and with the new practice arena and new arena that will be finished soon.

Cookie Miller and Alonzo Edwards TransferringThe Nebraska Basketball team will be losing a couple of players as Cookie Miller and Alonzo Edwards have asked to be released from their scholarships and be allowed to transfer to different schools.

Miller cited family reasons for wanting to transfer closer to his home state of West Virginia. Miller has a couple of young daughters out there and would like to be around them more often. Hopefully Cookie can land a spot on a team on the East Coast and continue his basketball career and education.

Edwards seen action in 16 games for the Huskers this season but was not getting the playing time that he thought he should be getting. He was in Doc Sadler’s doghouse early in the season for not hustling during practice and really never got out of the doghouse as the season went on. He played a grand total of 70 minutes, averaging 1.7 points and 0.9 rebounds in the limited playing time he did see.

We wish both Cookie and Alonzo the best in the future and thank them for their time with the Husker Basketball team.

Quincy Hankins NebraskaQuincy Hankins a 6’8 240 lb forward from Polk County Community College in Florida has accepted a basketball scholarship from Doc Sadler reports are saying this morning. Hankins averaged close to 16 points and 12 rebounds a game last year for Polk CC.

Other schools like Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, Seton Hall, South Florida, and South Carolina were also recruiting him.

The Huskers are also recruiting Hankins’s teammate Lance Jeter who is a 6’3 point guard. I found it interesting that Jeter used to be a wide receiver on the University of Cincinnati football team. He says he does have some “football weight” to lose but once that is gone he will be “unstoppable.”

Nebraka loses to New MexicoThe Nebraska Cornhuskers played in the opening round of the NIT Tournament on Tuesday night and after receiving a tough draw and opening up the tournament down at New Mexico, their season came to an end with a 83-71 loss to New Mexico. Playing in “The Pit” is never an easy game for an opposing team as the Lobos play very well from home and they showed that once again against Nebraska.

The undersized Nebraska squad just couldn’t shut down the Lobos like they usually do to a team on the defensive side of the ball. The Lobos hit 51.1 percent from the field and 53.3 percent from 3-point range in the 12 point victory.

For the Huskers, they were led by Sek Henry with a team high 13 points. Steve Harley was right behind Henry in the scoring column as he added 11 points.

Overall this small team showed that they could play with the bigger and stronger teams through out the season, but when it came down to it, they didn’t have enough depth and size to really contend in the conference and win some post season games. We wish the outgoing seniors the best as the move on from Nebraska Basketball.

Nebraska NIT BidThe Nebraska Mens Basketball team will continue playing this season as they were selected as a number six seed in the NIT Tournament. They will leave Monday afternoon and head to Albuquerque, N.M. where they will take on New Mexico Tuesday night. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. CST and will be aired on ESPNU.

Sure the Huskers didnt make the big tournament, but the NIT is good for the team as it allows them to continue playing and hopefully get some extra practices and games in. The Lobos however will give the Huskers a battle as they come into the game with a number three seed and an overall record of 21-11.

nebraska is blown out by misouriI’m going to keep this pretty short today as it is Valentines Day and all. The Cornhuskers traveled down to Columbia, Missouri and were rolled by the Tigers by the score of 70-47. Yeah the Huskers lost by 23 points on the road. A cold shooting day and a second half where they could not play defense turned the game into a blowout and dissappointing loss for the Huskers.

The Tigers got way to many fast break points in the second half and the lack of a big man down low hurt the Huskers I felt. This game sure doesn’t help the Huskers chances of making the big dance come March that is for sure.

Nebraska holds off ColoradoIt sure wasn’t pretty but the Nebraska Cornhuskers picked up their second road win in the conference on Wednesday night. The Huskers held a nice lead through the game but then seen it dwindle down late in the game before they were able to get out of Boulder with a 55-53 victory. The win in Boulder was the first one for Doc Sadler since he became coach.

As a team the Huskers had a season high 18 turnovers in the game. They are lucky that the Buffaloes committed 13 of their own turnovers or this could have easily been a loss.

Steve Harley and Ryan Anderson both led the Huskers with 12 points each.

Nebraska returns to the court on Saturday when the Huskers host to No. 16 Texas at the Devaney Center. The game will tip off at 1 p.m. and can be seen nationally on ESPN.
