Award watch lists are starting to make their way out into publications and websites for the upcoming college football season and so two Nebraska players made it on lists today.  Marlon Lucky has been named to the 2008 Maxwell Award watch list, which is given annually to the nation’s top player by the Maxwell Football Club. Joe Ganz has been named to the watch list for the Jonny Unitas Golden Arm Award, given to the nation’s top senior quarterback.

Congrats to Lucky and Ganz, but I’m sure they both know it is all just preseason talk and nothing will happen until they step on to the field and have a great season for the University of Nebraska Football team.

Good morning Husker fans, I received a pretty cool e-mail this morning about former Nebraska Football legend Grant Wistrom who will be playing NCAA 2008 on the XBOX 360 with in store fans and with fans on XBOX Live.  Grant’s gamertag is: GWistrom98 and he will be on live from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm CT (12:00 pm to 3:00 pm ET).

Nebraska football and baseball recruit Khiry Cooper as most people know was drafted last week in the 5th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Los Angeles Angels.  Cooper is still unsure if he will sign with the Angels or stay in Lincoln and be part of the Huskers.

Right now Cooper is in Lincoln but has dropped his summer classes that he had planned on taking.  Once a player is enrolled in a division one school, he would not be able to be drafted once again until after their junior season.  Right now it is a waiting game between Cooper and the Angels.

Cooper has to decide if $125,000-$150,000 is a big enough signing bonus to pull him away from Nebraska.  He has said that he hopes to have a decision in the next week or so.

Nebraska tight end Hunter Teafatiller was charged with DUI early Monday morning as he was stopped near 11th and Cornhusker Streets in Lincoln.  Teafatiller’s blew a .2 which is more then twice the legal limit.

Head coach Bo Pelini has talked with Tafatiller about his problem and made him aware of the internal discipline he will face throughout the summer. Further discipline regarding Hunter’s playing status for the 2008 season will be determined as the case is resolved through the legal process.

I would not be suprised if he is actually kicked off the team to be honest.  This is third time for the same problem in the last year.  You would think he would have learned by now…

I received an email last night about a new Husker video that hit YouTube.  Former Husker linebacker Trev Alberts gives his input on what he thinks of the 2008 Nebraska Football team. I agree with him that the five home games to start the season will be great and the Virginia Tech game could be a turning point for the Huskers. If they can pull off the win then I expect them to carry a lot of momentum into the Missouri game. But if they lose, well watch out against the Wildcats the following week.

Dontrayevous Robinson accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Nebraska on Thursday night and became the fifth commitment of the 2009 class for the Huskers.  Robinson is a big bruiser type of runner back as he stands in at 6′1 and 215 lbs as he gets ready for his senior season of high school.

Robinson comes from the prestigious Trinity football program out of Texas so you know he is going to be ready for college after he finishes up high school.  He ran for just under 900 yards, had a little more than 200 yards receiving and 18 touchdowns as Trinity won the 5A state championship in Texas.

C.J. Zimmerer a fullback and linebacker from Omaha Gross received a full ride scholarship offer from the University of Nebraska last night and all it took was a night of sleep before he accepted the offer to become the fourth commit in the 2009 class for Nebraska Football.

Zimmerer stands in at 6′1 and weighs in at 215 lbs.  Hopefully he will have some room to pack on some muscle onto that frame and become a great in-state fullback for the Huskers.

The Nebraska Football team is a big need for defensive line prospects in the 2009 recruiting class and last night they received a verbal commitment from Thaddeus Randle a defense tackle prospect out of Galena Park North Shore in Texas.

Randle is currently listed at 6-1 and 255 lbs.  Expect Randle to pack on some pounds during his senior season and when he gets to Lincoln.

Randle chose Nebraska over scholarship offers from Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Baylor, TCU and Houston.

The NFL Draft happened over the weekend and only three Husker players were drafted.  Sure shows you what NFL staffs thought of the players that Nebraska has had lately… Not very much talent they thought.

Zack Bowman was the first Husker picked as he went in the 5th round to the Chicago Bears.  They Bears said they drafted Bowman hoping that he would be 100% over his knee injuries and back to the he had during his junior season.

Carl Nicks was drafted in the 5th round as well as he went to the New Orleans Saints.  Nicks was once thought to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick but slipped to the 5th round.  You have to think that his off the field incident and not being able to work out at the Nebraska Pro Day really hurt his stock.

Bo Rudd was picked up by the New England Patriots in the 6th round.  Rudd will have to really impress the Patriots during mini camps if he wants to make the team.

So far three other Huskers have signed free agent contracts.  Steve Octavien with the Kansas City Chiefs, Courtney Grixby with the Carolina Panthers, and Lance Brandenburgh with the San Francisco 49ers.  Brett Byford has signed on with the New York Jets.

Maurice Purify will take part of the Cincinnati Bengals mini camp but has not signed a contract.  The same deal with Corey McKeon who will take part in Tampa Bay Bucs minicamp and Tierre Green who will take part in Green Bay Packers mini camp.  We have also learned that Frantz Hardy has signed with the Philedelphia Eagles.

The Nebraska Football team has got their second commitment in the 2009 class.  Shawn Bodtmann, a 6-foot, 208-pounder, attended the NU spring game last weekend and left impressed with the Huskers’ facilities and fan support.

Bodtmann will be playing at one of the linebacker positions, depending on how much weight he puts on.  Definately look for Bodtmann to redshirt his first year in the program.

The Huskers have also offered Bodtmann’s teammate Eric Shrive, a 6-foot-7, 298-pound offensive tackle so they are hoping to get two players out of Pennsylvania for the 09 class.
