Lincoln, NE - Somewhat fittingly, the Husker baseball streak was ended today by the same man that helped put Nebraska baseball on the map, Dave Van Horn. The 9-4 loss to the Razorbacks (13-6) snapped the Huskers (15-3, 3-0) 14 game winnings streak ironically 1 win shy of Coach Van Horn’s own best streak at NU of 15 games.
The Huskers pitching kept one of the best hitting teams in the SEC at bay for 17 out of the 18 innings in this two game set. Unfortunately, the Huskers surrendered a season high 6 run inning in the 8th today. The scoring in that inning started when Cisterna crushed a 2-run bomb for his 4th home run of the year that landed all the way back by the restrooms in left field.
Erik Bird started the game and pitched well going 5 innings, giving up 2 runs and striking out 4. Freshman Matt Freeman from Elkhorn came in to pitch a scoreless 6th and after surrendering 1 run in the 7th to tie it 3 apiece, Nesseth and Herr combined for just 1 out in the 8th and surrendered 6 runs. Casey Hauptman stopped the bleeding, but the damage was done.
At the plate, Craig Corriston continued his hot hitting with a 2 for 4 day and an RBI. Senior Bryce Nimmo went 2 for 3 and scored once, but it just wasn’t enough.
The Huskers will try to bounce back at Hawks Field this week as Big XII opponent Oklahoma comes to town for a weekend series. First pitch is set for 2:05pm.
