NebraskaThe Huskers won their opener today over the New Mexico Lobos. They started off slow in the first inning when starting pitcher Tony Watson loaded the bases, but later escaped with only one run on the board. Finally, in the third inning, the bats came alive for the Big Red. Also, Watson got his “groove” when he retired 12 straight after the dismal first inning. By the end of the fourth inning, the Huskers had 5-1 lead with hits by Jake Opitz, Andy Gerch, Craig Corriston, and Bryce Nimmo. It is a very obvious that once the pitchers, and the bats get started, it is tough to stop these Huskers.

On the mound today, the Huskers started Tony Watson, and after six innings Mike Harmelink came in and took the rubber. At first he was a bit shaky, by hitting a batter, but he got his rhythm, and finished the inning. In the eighth, Arizona State transfer Drew Bowman came in and looked more than impressive. He threw with ease, placed his pitches at will. To finish off the game, Steve Edlefsen and Eric Bird came in and closed it out. Edlefsen, has made his main focus pitching this year. But today, wasn’t his best outing. He had two walks, one hit batter, and one hit with one earned run. Thats when Bird came in and mowed them down.

Overall, it was good to see the Huskers get a win. They worked a lot of young talent in and the pitching rotation some good work also. Like I previously said, when the hits start to get going and the pitchers find a good rhythm, the Huskers will be force. I look for big things from this team, they have a lot of young players, but also great leadership. Here are batting stats from the game, and stay tuned for more baseball updates as the weekend series continues.

NebraskaWell, with the first series of the year fast approaching, it’s time to give my projected starting line-up. The pitching rotation has recently came out, and I will have it here also!

Projected Starters/ Batting Order

1. Nick Sullivan/LF
2. Bryce Nimmo/CF
3. Ryan Wehrle/SS
4. Thad Weber/1B**
5. DJ Belfonte/RF*
6. Andy Gerch/DH*
7. Jake Opitz/2B
8. Jeff Lanning/C
9. Jake Mort/3B

*May swap during the season

**Will vary with Andy Brown

The nine man line-up will have changes in the early part of the season, so the coaches see how they perform outside of practice. A very big thing to watch is the third base position. Jake Mort has experience playing “the hot corner”, but players such as Craig Corriston and Steve Edlefsen are nipping at his heels for playing time. Corriston is a JUCO transfer out of Paris, Texas that will be a very good bat in the line-up. Edlefsen, as Husker fans may remember, hit for the cycle last season against Iowa.

Yet there is still more positions that are still up for grabs. Catcher, is one of them. I think that Jeff Lanning will get the majority of the starts, but look for Mark Hightower out of Elkhorn, Nebraska to push for time also. The other position that is still unsettled is the corner outfielders. Andy Gerch, whom is a leader on the team may also see time at DH to get the bat of DJ Belfonte in the game. It will all depend on the pitcher they will face, and who will hit the best against them. Finally, first base is another position that could see some changes. Andy Brown will see the majority of the time, but Thad Weber is too good of hitter to sit the bench. Both have good power, and power is something that the Huskers are lacking this season.

Pitching Rotation

Weekend
1. Tony Watson
2. Johnny Dorn
3. Charlie Sherik
Mid- Week
1. Matt Foust
2. Drew Bowman
3. Mike Nihsen

NebraskaAfter fall and winter practices, the Husker baseball team is more than ready to get outside and start the season. Febrarury 16, 2007 the Huskers will hit the road and take on New Mexico in a double header on that Friday, as- well as UT- Arlington on Saturday, and to finish the weekend, a game against the Redbirds of Illinois State on Sunday.

The Huskers are led by returning starters Tony Watson, Ryan Wehrle, and Andy Gerch among others. They will return 22 players off last years roster, which will be a very big impact on the leadership of the team. Going into the opening series, it will be very interesting to see the rotation coach Mike Anderson goes with. With a stable of great Huskers pitchers, it seems the three that will make up the three-man rotation are Tony Watson, Johnny Dorn and Arizona State transfer Drew Bowman.

The weekend rotation will be something to watch in this series, due to the fact that right- handed pitcher Charlie Shirek has been pushing of that third spot in the rotation. The early word going into the opener is that possible “sunday man” Bowman has topped out with a 97mph fastball, which would have scouts drooling. With a large selection of pitchers, it’s hard to tell who will be the third man in the rotation. I Heard everything from Drew Bowman to Matt Foust. Foust is a very good pitcher, and will push for a weekend spot big time. Behind the starters there are two other pitchers that will do releif work; Erick Bird and Zach Herr. Both Bird and Herr saw good action last year, but this year, they have to replace all-time saves leader Brett Jensen. Stay tuned in the next few days for a run down of the rest of the team and my projected starting line-up!

Aleks MaricAleks Maric had a career night tonight against Kansas State as the senior center scored a career high 41 points leading the Huskers to the 74-63 win.  Maric’s 41 points come in second on the all time Huskers list.  He couldn’t quite get passed sharp shooter Eric Piatkowski who had 42 points.

Kansas State seemed to have control early in the game but as the game went on they begin to get into early foul trouble and never had an answer for Maric.  Big bear Huggins was seen on the sidelines throwing a fit more times then once, so that was great to watch :)

Will the Huskers be able to keep the momentum rolling?  We will have to wait and see!

NebraskaAs the SanDiego Chargers begin looking for a headcoach some names are starting to float around on the Internet.  One of those names is Bill Callahan who was mentioned in a ESPN article about the head coaching job with the Chargers.

Bill Callahan, Nebraska head coach: This might be a long shot but it deserves some consideration. Callahan coached in the AFC West and he was successful. The Raiders went to a Super Bowl under his watch. He can bring a good staff on offense and defense.”

Well no kidding it would be a long shot, I don’t think Callahan wants to go back to the NFL.  Especially the way he is building up the Nebraska program the past few years.  He is finally getting hit style of players to run the West Coast offense and we are going to see great results next year.

Just another Internet rumor, so lets not put much thought into it :)

NebraskaLast night, first year Husker coach, Doc Sadler suspended sophomore guard Jamel White for the remainder of the season.  Neither White or Salder would say why, although coach Sadler said it was not for academics.

I won’t begin to speculate on what it could be as I don’t want to spread around rumors etc that aren’t true.  If anything does come out of it, you will hear it here on Nebsports.

Jamel did say that he planned on being back with the team next year if given the opportunity.  Coach Sadler really didn’t have much of a reply to that, other then he would have to think about it at the end of the season.
