NebraskaAnother bad rep for the Husker program today and for Maurice Purify as he was arrested last night for DWI shortly after midnight.  When are you going to learn that alcohol is causing problems for you Maurice? C’mon you are letting yourself and your teammates down by doing this.

Hopefully Purify will get into some sort of AA program and get this problem fixed before the start of the season.  I can really expect him to be suspended for quite a while now if not off of the team.

What do you all think out there in Husker land?

** Update on the situation as Coach Callahan has now commented on the incident.  Coach has told Purify that he is indefinitely suspended from the team for right now.  I would assume it will be a while before we hear anything else about it.

NebraskaThe only Nebraska Baseball player to be drafted on day 1 of the 2007 MLB Draft was pitcher Drew Bowman.  Bowman, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound sophomore from Morrison, Colo., finished 4-1 with a 4.31 ERA in 14 appearances.

Alot of people thought that Luke Wertz or Tony Watson’s names would be called on day 1 but they never were.  Expect their names to be called today for sure.

I have to wonder why Bowman didn’t get many chances to throw the ball for the Huskers.  Especially when the team was doing so poorly.  Is Bowman a headcase?  Did he not get along with Coach Anderson?  I suppose only the players and coaches know that for sure.  You would think if a player has the stuff to be a 5th round pick, he would have got more opportunities with the Huskers.

NebraskaThe Nebraska-Wake Forest football game on Sept. 8 will be televised by ESPN and kick off at 11 a.m.

The Huskers haven’t played a regular-season game on ESPN since 2003 (at Southern Mississippi). Other appearances on ESPN are possible after the cable network and Big 12 recently announced five prime-time slots for 2007.

NU’s trip to Wake Forest will fall between televised home games with Nevada (Sept. 1, 2:30 p.m., ABC regional) and Southern Cal (Sept. 15, 7 p.m., ABC national).

NebraskaNebraska nearly overcame a six-run deficit, but fifth-ranked Arizona State pulled away in the later innings to post a 19-7 victory late Sunday in the title game of the NCAA Tempe Regional.

The Sun Devils, who upped their record to 46-13, will now take on Mississippi in a Super Regional matchup next weekend, while the Huskers, who reached a regional title game for the sixth time in the last eight years, finished the 2007 campaign with a 32-27 record.

Trailing 9-3, the Huskers scored a run in the sixth and used an RBI triple by Craig Corriston and a RBI single by Andrew Brown off of ASU starter Josh Satow to pull within three runs. After an error and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with no outs, Sun Devil closer Jason Jarvis came and struck out Andy Gerch before Jeff Tezak’s grounder to short made it a 9-7 game. Jarvis, who struck out five in three innings of no-hit relief for his 11th save, escaped additional trouble by getting Bryce Nimmo to ground out to end the threat.

NebraskaThe offense came out for the Nerbaska Cornhuskers this afternoon as they avenged a earlier loss to UC-Riverside with a nice 11-1 thumping this afternoon in the Tempe regional.

The Huskers will now play Arizona State this evening. If the Huskers are able to get past ASU they will then play them again tomorrow.

GO BIG RED!!!

NebraskaThe Huskers didn’t get off to the right foot yesterday in NCAA Regional play as they lost to the #2 seed UC-Riverside by the score of 10-5. The Huskers got off to a good start but could not hold onto it as the pitchers gave up 10 walks in the ballgame and anytime you walk that many batters, they are eventually going to come around and score.

Nebraska will now face Monmouth this afternoon. Monmouth played Arizona State pretty tough before falling 5-3. The Huskers really need to pick up this win or it will be another 2 and out of regional play just like last year.
