Austin, TX - The #15 Huskers (20-3-1, 6-0-1) looked like they might be in for a rude awakening on Friday night as they were down 4-0 early to the #12 Texas Longhorns (17-7, 4-2). Then the Huskers scored 14 unanswered runs between the 4th and 8th innings to down the Longhorns 14-4.
Johnny Dorn (3-0) picked up the win despite not having his best outing. Dorn pitched just 5 innings, gave up 7 hits and 4 earned runs and struck out just 1. With Dorn struggling hanging on to a 6-4 lead, the Huskers turned to Dan Jennings who wouldn’t allow a single baserunner for the rest of the game. Jennings pitched 4 innings, 0 hits, 4 strikeouts and 0 walks on the day.
The Husker offense pounded out 14 hits, led true Freshman Shortstop Ben Kline out of Omaha Central broke out of a slump with a 3 for 5 3 RBI day including a two-run single with 1 out to cap a 4-run 5th that put the Huskers up for good at 5-4. Mitch Abeita also had a great day at the plate going 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs of his own.ÂÂ
Jake Opitz added a solo shot before the Husker broke it open with 2 more 4-run innings in the 7th and 8th to extend the lead to 14-4.
The win was a big statement for the Huskers that they in fact are going to be a big factor in this season’s Big XII race. The Huskers will go for the series win tomorrow at 6:00pm as the game will be seen in the midwest on Fox Sports Net.
